I think the original Battlestar Galactica has a better story line, so I voted for it.

I watched the original 1978 Battlestar Galatica (BSG from now on) series when it first aired on ABC as a little boy. I remember feeling excited as I tuned in and felt like a member of the Galatica crew, I thought it was as great as Star Wars. A couple of years later, I went to the FAO Schwartz toy store in New York City and visited an exhibit which contained a huge computer console, filled with switches, buttons, knobs, and flashing lights. Directly behind the console on the wall, revealed a wide screen displaying a slide show of Star Wars characters, and there were several posters of characters from BSG and Buck Rogers, couple with toys. The intention was to create the feeling of being on a spaceship, I believe. In any case, the whole exhibit was very cool. After many years, I forgot about BSG, until the Sci-Fi Channel reaired BSG and Buck Rogers, where both shows actually helped launched the network. I began to rewatch all the episodes and couldn't help but laugh at the cheesiness and silliness of the show, when viewed through the eyes of an adult. Most of the episodes were poorly written, although the two-parter episodes were good and the acting was decent, considering what the actors were given to work with. In the pilot, "Saga of a Star World", there is a scene where the Galatica crew decide to head to the casino planet for a little R&R, right after their world has been destroyed! That doesn't sound very plausible from an objective point-of-view. And the fact that the aliens looked way too human made me cringe with embarrassment. Now here enters neo-BSG. Well, I have to admit that the new version is far superior to the original in every way. It's dark, gritty, and suspenseful, everything that the original should have been from the get-go. In fact, BSG creator Glen A. Larson originally set out to make the show dark and gritty, unfortunately, he was unable to do so due to the network censors at the time. That being said, neo-BSG is closer to his original vision. Let's face it, if we were to experience the destruction of earth and were forced to look for another planet to live on, the last thing I would do is have a party and barbecue! For those that complain that the new show is too bleak and pessimistic, well, it is to a point, but this new show also stresses that even in the darkest hour, hope prevails. The episode entitled, "33" where we first learned that hundreds more died, only to have a baby boy born at the end of the episode was very moving and hopeful. Let's not forget that other episode where Captain Apollo blew up the Cylon base and helped with the seizing of new fuel for the fleet. The characters are real and well-developed, although Starbuck gets on my nerves at times. Actress Katie Sackoff tries too hard to be tough that she sacrifices her femininity. Granted, it's a tough feat to do, but come on already! Just the same, it's refreshing to see a science fiction tv show that features real characters who have issues. Hell, who doesn't? Nonetheless, we have already begin to see her soft-side and she's just slowly becoming more interesting. Still, I don't like having to wait three to five years to flesh out a character like Starbuck because I think a character should be interesting and fascinating from the get-go. Aside from that, I have no other complains about neo-BSG. In short, neo-BSG makes Larson's original baby look like crap. And for those purists who are waiting for a continuation movie of the original series to come to fruition, I got four words for you: it ain't gonna happen. I know that Larson has the movie rights, but if by some small remote chance manages to get it produced, the only chance it has is if it is a direct DVD release. Neo-BSG is THE version of Galatica that todays' audiences recognize. The fact that season three is on the way proves that the audiences enjoy the show and want it to go on. Long live neo-BSG! If you would have asked me this question before I watched the new series I would have considered it blasphemy The original Battlestar Galactica series is a treasured part of my childhood and will always own a high rank in my mind. It is one of the biggest reasons I am a scifi fan now. I'm sure many of us had the same reservations going in: Starbuck and Boomer - girls? Cylons look like humans? Aaaaaaaaagh
All that said the plain truth of the matter is that not only is the new adventures of Apollo, Starbuck and Adama better than the original - it may well be the best television show I've ever seen.
Every episode leaves me starving for more. The stories are fresh and visceral; and every character is masterfully constructed from Baltar to the cylons.
This season upped the ante even more with a bold season finale that leaves our heroes even farther from their goal of reaching Earth.
Short answer: To me the new show is better, I didn't want it to be... but it just is

I suppose it is about time for me to chime in on here. The original series was both good and typical for the time period. It is still well worth watching, and I will soon be acquiring the DVD set.
However, the new series is, in my opinion, beyond belief. Not only is it better than the original, it is the best science fiction currently on television, and probably the best show period. I am a Stargate Fan, but even they sucumb to the "Oh wow, look at that"/"Wouldn't it be cool if" type of plots. To me, the scientific speculation should be driven by the story, rather than the other way around. And BSG 2.0 delivers that, plus has the great characters.
Most of the criticisms I have heard revolve around female versions of key characters and the use of bullets in space. As for the female characters, well, they are both more believable and give the series its own unique identity. Starbuck in the original series was careless, annoying and unrealistic for modern tastes. The new Starbuck is a stubborn pain in the a** that will probably ruin Katie Sackoff's career by typecasting her too much. And anybody who doesn't understand how bullets work in space, let me know and will gladly explain the physics and chemistry of a firearm. There is absolutely no reason they would not work in a vacum.

I voted for the old BSG because I grew up watching it on TV. I never really got into BSG2.

My favourite is the original Battlestar Galactica series. ;D It had excellent stories, a great cast and everyone in the family could watch it.

Whitestar I respectfully disagree. There are many, many fans who enjoy the original BSG series and there many fan clubs out there for it. I belong to several of them. Tom DeSanto is also interesting in making an original BSG series movie.

Gotta go with the new one. The old one looks waaay too 1970's dated. Even Star Trek:TOS doesn't look completely like it came from the 60's. BSG: TOS looks really cheesy.
