At the moment we have a Star Trek (TOS) season, and you can watch the original series from Monday to Thursday (Friday is a repeat), and on weekends as well.
Watching the old Star Trek series again, I can't help but smile at their 60s imagination of a future - everything is still as it was in the 60s. LOL Besides that, we once discussed here which captain is better, Picard or Kirk, and I can now confidentially say that I prefer Picard. Kirk has shown quite a temper and acted very un-captain-like (I know there is no such word), whereas Picard has to 99% always acted correct, and has not been aggressive towards others, as Kirk has been. He was short with his 'friends', and other crew members, never mind the aliens they encountered.
So anyway, I am watching it every night at 7pm. ;D

Shush up! Part of the fun of it is the fact that its not belevable just go with it. i agree that it can be boring at times but still what show isnt? If you want a more relistic Sci-Fi show watch BattleStar Glatica and dont diss the favroits! I agree with you there. All shows have boring moments, and I think the movies have become more exciting. I in my opinion, the reason Star Trek seems boring is because Rick Berman just doesn't carry Gene Roddenberry's enthusiasm for it, the producers seem to have lost the original imagination the Roddenberry had. And as for the science fiction part of it, Gene Roddenberry himself admitted that it was a family show first and foremost. A family show set in space.

The fun of science fiction is not about scientific accuracy, it is about a story being told outside the boundaries of science - which is why it is called science fiction. Would someone in the 1950s or 1960s even imagine that there woould be personal computers. Computers were considered machines which filled an entire building. Now kids use them for their homework. You can play chess with them the strongest levels are way beyond the abilities of average players. Way back when the Wright brothers made a first manned flight could they have imagined that millions of people travelling all over the world in huge aircraft. Consider the latest Airbus aircraft designed to carry 800 passengers. Supersonic aircraft were inconceivable. Rockets have become ICBMs. The realm of possibilities are endless what will happen no one knows but imagining what can possibly happen is for those who love Sciience Fiction not Science Fact. Jules Verne's idea of a submarine was science fiction for his time, it is science fact today. So coming to Star Trek, there two type of people those who love and those don't. Why watch the movies and the show if you don't like it.? I love Star Trek and Stargate Sg-1 because its pure Science Fiction and not Science Fact and made to look real. Technobabble makes them interesting. I agree with you 100%

Star Trek has run its course. After 28 years of Trek, it was wise on Paramounts' part to give the franchise a much needed rest. The Original Series (TOS) was to a large extent, a repackaging of science fiction cliches, which was taken from Forbidden Planet. Etc., etc., etc... Whitestar Boooooooooooooooooooo.

Science Fiction is just that, FICTION. Nothing says it has to be true to life and follow our laws of physics. Fiction means made up, not true, so I agree with the previous statement that called what you describe as Science Fact and not Science Fiction.
I also thought DS9 was the best trek series ever because their character and plot development exceeded those of the other series, however I feel Star trek is far from being a dumbed down show. So many of your top scientists today have said Star Trek was their inspiration for getting into the careers that they did, and that is saying a lot for just a tv show.

Not just top scientists...I do not know about now, but back in the late 80's, early 90's, if you walked through the common areas of any engineering college and polled the students, you would find the vast majority of them were trekkies and credit Star Trek for being at least some form of inspiration. The Next Generation season finales and season premiers were huge events when I was in college.

It wasn't just another series "where no man has gone before"

I don't like Star Trek. But it's ok. I've seen Star Trek: Nemesis though and it was good. But I still prefer Star Wars

It's like saying, 'I don't like Harry Potter' but I do like 'Lord of the Rings'. They are both fantasy or, in the matter of ST and SW, Sci-fi programmes, but have nothing to do with each other.

Gotta agree with that. Even though both is set in space, the only real similarities between the two is is both has 'Star' in there name. Star Wars is more like an epic fantasy set in space, despite the fact it is classified as science fiction, and Star Trek is more of science fiction set in space.

True, they aren't really related. However as a trekkie, it is fun to argue which is better since the empirical evidence is on our side. ;D
