Non-spoiler plot:
I was sure we had a thread on this movie, but cannot find it.
Anyway, I loved this movie. I have only seen it once, and that was a few years ago, but I was really moved by this movie.
I thought the story was great, and really, really felt for the little boy. Other elements of the movie such as Teddy, and Gigolo Joe was icing on the cake for me. I also have to admit, the ending did bring a tear to me eye.
This movie was originally a Stanley Kubrick project he had wanted to make for years, but the technology didn't exist for him to make it in his vision. After he died, his friend Steven Spielberg made it in Kubrick's vision.
I think A.I. is one of the most emotionally driven science fiction epics out there. I loved it.
What did you guys think of it?

I loved it as well i thought Hayley Joel Osment did a very good job as the artificial boy and Jude Law was also good. I loved Teddy too. It's the classic pinnochio formula, but it works so well, the scene towards the end when he arrives back and his "mother" wakes up is one of the most beautiful scenes on film. I shall watch this again today, I have it on DVD, and I haven't seen it in absolutetly ages! Then we can chat some more.

Unfortunately, I don't have it on DVD, but think it's going to be part of my next NetFlix order! And I agree with everything you said, such a beautiful and moving scene.

I've seen this film a couple of times and enjoy it very much. Firstly why would anyone want to create a robot that can love. At the moment it seems great you got a robot that loves you but it's only a matter of time before it will have to be destroyed. Like this film she couldn't bear to get it destroyed.
The humans are quite horrible when they start destorying the robots in their games. I would have though future humans would be a little bit kinder to robots even if they don't have emotions.
It's so sad at the end when he only gets just one day to spend with his mother. When she starts closing her eyes I feel sorry for David as he'll never see her again.

It's like the question the woman asked the creator in the beginning; once we create robots that can love, what responsibility do we have to that robot. A very morally philosophical question which I think holds true for the day we do achieve AI, which I believe we will.

The way technology is advancing at the present time, we could easily be challenged, in the future, by the moral questions that are posed in this film.

The movie's story disappointed me - because of its lack of continuity. When the real child of the parents revived from his coma, AI could have remained with the family, the real son would grow up while AI would not be able to do so. He would see that he was different from his 'brother' . His brother would become older, get educated and eventually get married, but AI would never grow up and remain a child forever. The story landed AI in the distant future and come across aliens which was absurd.

But if you remember, the reason they wanted to get rid of David (was David his name?) was because their real son was setting him up, to make the parents think he was a threat to the real son. There was more to getting rid of him other then simply because the real son came out of a coma. As for the aliens, if I remember correctly, they were mechas as well, not biological aliens. They were the robots that the robots had built.

David (I think it was David) was set up, you're right. The evil one who came out of a coma told him stupid things like she wouldn't love him as much and set-up the AI to cut a lock of mommy's hair. The mommy woke up with scissors point blank to her face and almost stabbing her in the eye. Plus when "David" was scared at the swimming pool outside and grabbed his human brother and they fell in the pool together. So yeah, majorly set up by coma kid.
They couldn't give David back as he had said the words to make him love like a real child and probablly would've been melted down. David ended up thinkinghis mommy didn't love him because he was AI and not a "real boy" which, was his ultimate quest, to become just that.
Horribly sad scene that picnic though where the mother dumps him, David does what any normal kid would do - cry and beg and reason and blame himself.

I'm happy to have found a thread about this movie. I watched i a while ago and I was absolutely impressed beyond words. The story was fascinating and so emotional. It really made me wish that a miracle would happen and David would become a real boy, he deserved it so much after all he'd been throgh.

Funnily enough, even though I have it on DVD, it was on UK TV again recently - so I watched it again. Missed the first 15 minute though.
This time I really think the mother-son just radiates through the film - alot more than the Pinocchio-esq aspect of it. There is that real-life bond thing - mothers/son, father's/daughters. It's just those little lines like "If I was a real boy she'd love me more" The end still has me in buckets, and I still loathe coma boy! He was an evil little turd!
I love David's moment of rage with David2 and going a bit skitzo, so much so that Gigolo Joe literally runs for his life! But at least he comes back! Something else struck me, it's a bit of a family film, certain bits in 'Joe's first scene - the dialogue made me slightly wince this time knowing it was aimed at that audience.

I hated that kid too, you'd think one would be a good person after being in a coma for a lot of time, etc etc.
I understood David's rage in that scene, it must have been pretty painful to him to find out that he was just one of many identical others. I don't remember the dialogues too well I'm afraid, I need to see the movie again.

It went something like:
*David approached the back of a chair in Professor Hobby's room*
David: Is this the place they make you real?
*Chair spins round to reveal david2 reading a book
David2: It's the place they make you read.. David: Are you... Me? David2: I guess so.. David: I'm David.. David2 (Chuckling): I'm David! David: Me too...
(Last 2 lines may very)
*David2 to wonders over to the table and sits.
David2: Can you read for me? let's read together, let's be friends..
*David adopts a low tone, hurtful in thinking there's another "David" for Mommy.
David: You can't have her.. David2: What? I can't hear you, speak up.. David: She's mine! And I'm the only one!
*David proceeds to grab the lamp and smash david2 round the head with it revealing a big metal patch on David2's cheek before knocking his head clean off
David: I'm David I'M DAVID!! I'M SPECIAL!! I'M UNIQUE!!
*Smashes glass table with lamp
David: I'M DAVID!! I'M DAVID!!
*'Joe rigid with horror and fear runs off with teddy.. After a minutes he tires swinging more loosely, his town lowering.
Davis I'm David, I'm David...
Finally professor Hobby comes in and grabs the lamps, stopping him swinging.
Professor Hobby: Yes, you are! David: Professor Hobby?!

Thanks Bones It's sad to think how he should have felt that moment. There he was, thinking that finding the professor would make him human so he could be happy with his mom, and he actually finds a building full of others like him.

I can not begin to tell you how this movie moved me. I am a mother and i am not sure I would have let David go without finding out why he did some of the things his 'brother' bade him to do. The scene where he is begging her not to leave him just flat out tore my heart in two. But you all should know by now that I am a big ole flake! lol
