To me, CGI will never take away from a movie, but if overdone, it can ruin the film.
Jurassic Park is the best example of CGI fitting the movie, while Day After Tomorrow can take away from the movie.
Don't get me wrong, Day after Tomorrow was a good film, but the CGI is what really saved the film as the rest of the movie was bland. Same could almost be said for the first two prequals for Star Wars as well(especially Ep II).
