Windows 2000 is probably the best windows, followed by XP Pro or 98. I've got XP home on this computer, and to this day it refuses to acknowledge the fact that it's attached to a printer. XP Home does not like home computer networks. Oh, BTW, do not get Windows ME even if your life depends on it. It is much better to be dead. Or use DOS XP works great for me...then again I had ME for almost 3 years

Read on a bumper sticker:
"The box said, 'Must use Windows2000 or better' - so I installed Linux"
Hahaha.

Actually Linux seems to be the golden child right now, but a great friend of mine hates it with a passion because a majority of programs do not work with Linux and never will be. In fact he is considering getting Windows XP just so he can use the programs he wants to with no problems.

I can't believe I didn't see this thread before...oh well. In case anybody is actually interested, Windows technically started with version 1.0 (surprise!), but it didn't get much acceptance. Windows didn't start gaining any momentum until version 2.0, which I actually saw a demonstration of during my first semester of computer science (one of my professors had written a book on IBM's OS/2 - Window's competitor at the time, and was in the process of writing one of the first books on Windows 3.0 programming...talk about learning from people at the source) Windows 3.0, of course, is where it really took off. The reason Windows 2000 (and its predecessors NT 3x, 4.0) were so much more stable than 9x is that the NT Kernel was a true 32 bit, multi-tasking, protected mode operating system (based on VMS, I believe). Windows 9x, even though you may not have needed to install DOS, still used it as a core part of the operating system. The reason Windows XP lost a lot of the easy compatability with 9x is that it finally cut out it's ties to DOS. If anybody wants more info, try this link: www.microsoft.com/windows/WinHistoryIntro.mspxOne thing that fascinates me is the complete reversal of roles between Microsoft and IBM. IBM teamed up with Microsoft to develop an operating system (OS/2) to leverage the 80286 and 80386 processors. When Microsoft went their separate ways to market Windows instead, IBM cried foul when Microsoft was practically giving it away. List price for 3.0 was ~$100, yet OEM agreements were pushing it out on new computers at less than half that. OS/2 on the other hand, was well over $300, and applications were double the cost of the Windows equivalent. And you didn't even want to think about getting the SDK for OS/2 for casual use. Now, IBM has completely embraced the open source movement, and Microsoft is the evil corporation that actually has the nerve to charge for the software they produce.

Allthough I have had my share of problems with Windows 98, I have found that it is much better than Windows ME,, Windows 2000 and many times better than the worst which Microsoft could offer Windows XP. Windows XP is the weakest, a single virus or anything else can make it crash. Besides this Windows XP does not run programs which run on Windows 98 very nicely. DOS works on Windows 98 but is useless in Windows XP. I only wish the people at Apple were to start selling their opertating system to PC users, because Microsoft is definitely going from bad to worse. Apple is the only OS worth using (except for linux).
