Hope everything goes well with the surgery. And this tunnel thing, is it something like arthritis (spelling?)?

basically it boils down to ergonomics.
If you sit at a desk all day and do not have proper spinal support, you will get a bad back
If you do not have proper wrist support when typing for long periods, you develop bad wrists
Also if you do repetitive motion stuff with any body part, the body tends to break down in that area because of overuse. It is not normal for the human body to continually bend over and pick items up for 8 hours a day.
Going by what slayer has posted, I would believe the job slayer does required heavy use of the fingers and hands continually for hours on end, and it finally caught up with him/her.
I have a friend who worked for a factory that required him to continually bend over and lift boxes for hours at a time, he now has a very messed up back, because his job never gave him enough downtime to equal out the uptime of bending over continually.

at the post office I had to take a big long detailed class on it....its called Carpal Tunnel Syndrome....and basically what it is....is there is a bundle of nerves in your wrist that go through one tiny little section of bone....and basically what happens is that the nerves end up getting pinched by that bone by overuse of your hands in a certain position....and they basically have to go in and do some cutting on the bone and stuff to relieve the pressure off the nerves....it is getting to be more common every day and there isnt much of a good surgery they can do for it....

And Bush didnt help much by changing the laws either to make it harder to claim it for workmens comp either
I volunteer at a rehab center(part of my training to be a PTA) and I have seen alot of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome cases, and really its sad to see these 20-30 yr olds suffering through pain the way they do most of the time.
