Do lightsaber colors have any significance? Originally, I didn't think so, but then I started to ponder, and I realized that all of the Sith apparently use a red lightsaber. Blue, green and purple are more common among the Jedi than red, although I think I recall one or two reds during ATOC.
Is this just pure effects by Lucas, red meaning evil or is there some type of backstory to this? I really don't know.

Judging from everything I've seen recently with the Cartoon Network Clone Wars cartoons, I must say that I think red is reserved for the Sith and the Sith ONLY.

Since posting this thread, I have done some research, and it seems that there are special crystals used to give energey to the lightsabers. Depending on the color of the crystal, one gets the color of the blade.
Every Jedi must build his/her own lightsaber, to trully become a Jedi, and must find thier own crystal. The Sith use a synthetic crystal, and it just so happens that the color of the synthetic crystal is red.
Remember when DArth Vader was speaking to Luke in Return of the Jedi, and said; "So, I see you have constructed a new lightsaber, your skills are now complete" Meaning Luke passed the final test to become a Jedi, which is pretty amazing as he didnt have the resources of the Old Republic, just the teachings of Obi-Wan and Yoda.

Ummmmmmmm yep...I am sure u remember my answer about this over at the other place...LOL at least in Knights of the old republic the colors can mean different things....such as what class of jedi you are....like a scout or warrior and so on...and they can also mean possibly what type of crystal you have in your sabre and what possible additional powers it might give you.

In "Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic" Blue - Guardian [Focus on Saber attacks] Yellow - Sentinel [Focus on the Force] Green - Counsolur [Balance] Other colours are just for fun. anyone can have any colour, but those 3 categories are the main choices for every new Jedis. Appaarently Luke & Anakin both made a Green one Balance

Darth Maul's for me! It has to take talent to be able to fight with one of those and not sever your own head

LOL. My favorite is the one Obi Wan has in The Phantom Menace. I love that blue color. I have an action figure of him and his blue lightsaber glows in the dark. ;D

Very cool! I used to have almost all of the original Star Wars toys, even an AT AT, and a giant Darth Vader head caryying case. Some pretty cool memories in all of that, I can still remember buying new Return of the Jedi toys, and finding Empire toys every so often. The Episode IV toys were gave to me. Ahh, those were the days! Before the Prequels came out, remember they came out with SW figures again, in the early 90's based on the original movies. I have all of the first set, still in thier packages, the only ones I can find though is Yoda, and Boba Fett. I learned how much they could be worth, an original Vader from 1977 in the packae, mint condition is worth a few thousand.

The special crystals they use are known as Corusca gems(or cyrstals). They can be found in Yavin the star, the secret jedi storage place on some ice planet(the name as forsaken me), or you can create them with the force as darth maul did, though that takes much longer.

I think I read on a site once that when Obi one kills Darth Maul in no. 1, he takes one half of Maul's red saber (since it got cut in half and the other half fell down the shaft) and gives it to Anikan, and that's how Vader ends up with the red saber.

Since I am not interested in the "new" SW films I can´t really comment on the details of those films.
But in the original trilogy, the goodies had a white beam and Darth Vader had a red one coming from his lightsaber.
When Obi Wan fought Darth, Obi Wan´s lightsaber was white and Darth Vader´s was red. So I assumed that the white beam was for the goodies i.e. pure and the red was for baddies i.e. blood. Just like the goodies in old films always wear white and the baddies wear black. LOL
