There are only a few issues I have with the SG1 series premise. One that kind of bugs me is this: Why has the SGC encountered so few intelligent species?
The Ancients (basically, human beings)
The Goa'uld (critters that parasitize other sentient species)
The Jaffa (basically human beings who have been altered by the Goa'uld)
The Unas -- original Goa'uld hosts
The Asgard
The Ascended (previously the ancients)
The odd looking bunch that tried to overrun the SGC, by replacing SGC members via some kind of holographic mimicry along with a memory imprint. The episode was called "Foothold", but I'm not sure what the species were called, or if that was even known
The alien life-form that invaded first the SGC computer, and then Carter
The Kumtruya guy's species (who created androids based on SG1) -- but that species may have been human
The life form that infected the SG1 team with the Urgo guy.
The Space Hippies
The species that had that cool space race (Carter thought it was cool, anyway!)
And a few other odds and ends.
But the vast majority of planets that have been encountered in SG1 are inhabited by human beings of various levels of advancement.
On the one hand, you can argue that since the Ancients built the Stargates, the stargates would be placed on worlds with human-friendly environments. Or at least one-time human friendly environments. On the other hand it stretches my imagination a little that they haven't run into more species variety out there in their travels.
What do you think? Should the SGC have encountered more truly different species in their exploration of the Stargate system? Or does it make sense that they'll begin to see more new species (like the space race bunch) once they do more traveling via ships?

You forgot to mention the Tok'ra. And in the episode "Cold Lazarus", a crystaline alien is changing into O'Neill and goes back to Earth with the team, levaving the real O'Neill back on the planet. Then there are the Nox... wonderful people who can make themselves and everything around them invisible. I think they introduced a fair amount of aliens and personally, I don't think it's necessary to have a completely different race included in each episode - it will most likely confuse many viewers. ;D And regarding the "humans" on the other planets... I think that the writers are just too lazy to come up with more original ideas than sending the team to a planet were Native Americans live ("Spirits"), or go and visit a people who look and act like Mongolians in the time of Genghis Khan (from the episode "Emancipation"), or where the people are from the Middle Ages. Why bother, I say... If they can't find something original, don't do it. I am bored stiff seeing the team encountering all those humans that in fact represent our humans from the past. I mean, how likely would it be that people who look like us but live far far away in god knows what galaxy, would go through the same history as we did?

I thought the Tok'ra are basically covered under Humans/Goa'ulds. A Goa'uld variant, because the queen had a conscience.
I always think of the Nox as space hippies. I realize there are a few others I left out, mostly because I couldn't think of their names. Like the metallic, insectile-looking aliens that were usually cloaked.
There was also Tyler, the shapeshifter who convinced SG1 they had another member.
Like I said, odds and ends here and there, but nothing like the diversity I'd expect in a galaxy spanning network of Stargates.

I kinda wondered about the Tolins, whether they're human or not. An Ancient colony that didn't ascend but also didn't fall under the rule of the Goa'uld.
Can't decide what they are!

That's what I thought, Asguard. So there have been just a handful of non-human species besides the Goa'uld symbiotes and the Asgard.
All those SG teams out there exploring and developing worlds, and so few truly different species have turned up. From a make-up perspective it can be very complicated to turn an actor into an alien. Or it can be very easy. Look at Star Trek. A Neelix, Worf or Odo versus the minor make-up needed to create a Kira, a Tuvok, a Kess.
As long as there are a few really different aliens occasionally, nearly-human aliens can add to the look of diversity without adding a lot of difficulty to make-up and wardrobe.

Yeah, I think the equivalent of a Worf or Neelix every day would be hard on the make-up crew. Though the ST crews did it and more, nearly every episode of TNG, DS9, and Voyager.
But the equivalent of nose ridges (Bajorans) or ears (Vulcans) wouldn't be too hard to pull off. Not really all that different from putting Teal'c's gold mega-tattoo on the forehead.

Farscape had the best 'aliens' in both Stargate and Star Trek almost all the aliens are essentially human in appearance. They may have pointy ears, or ridged foreheads - but they all look human. To have really cool aliens the creators of Farscape had the best idea how to depict them.
