LOL! I didn't care much for the way that Narsil sat out most of the films, either. It seemed that in the trilogy that Aragorn had the intent, but faced quite a few temptations along the way. There was never any question that the temptations would fail.
And of course, the whole Arwen story arc was soldered on to Tolkein's tale for who knows what artistic(?) purpose.
The entire Fellowship with the exception of Aragorn, Frodo and Gandalf was unlikely. Legolas was just one of a motley crew. The character development and individual adventures of that motley bunch was a way to show the huge "world spanning" conflict from multiple unique perspectives. We never see the story unfold from Gandalf's perspective, and we didn't often see it unfold from Aragorn's perspective. If Elrond had sent the ring with 6 High Elf warriors as he'd originally planned, instead of Legolas, Gimli, Merry, Pippin and Sam, it would have been a MUCH less interesting story!
Edited to add...
Elrond chose several of the Fellowship members to represent the "peoples" who were endangered by the Ring's return. It was pretty much a foregone conclusion that the High Elves were done with Middle Earth, no matter how the conflict turned out. Legolas represented a group of elves who were more "tied" to Middle Earth and not as ready to return to Westernesse. Maybe that one of the factors in his choice?

You make a good point about the Sindar elves that Legolas is part of, being more 'bound' to Middle-Earth's fate than the Noldor who are reaching the end of their existence there.
However, I think that it would be apt to choose on of the Noldor to go with the Fellowship because they have probably been the most influential and pivotal race (or sub-race) in the history of Middle-Earth. True, the Edain, ancesters of the DĂșnedain, have played a large part too, but in the elder times of Middle-Earth, the Noldorin Elves were the real power that opposed Morgoth and then Sauron. So, I think it would be more suitable to choose the 'elder statesmen' of Middle-Earth, the High-Elves, to join the Fellowship, because they have looked after Middle-Earth for many ages. They also, created the Rings of Power (with the exception of The Ruling Ring) and they taught Sauron himself the craft of ring-making. They are responsible for a large part of the history leading up to the War of The Ring.
Behind one of the High-Elves, I would have one of the descendants of the Edain to join the Fellowship, as they will inherit Middle-Earth from the Eldar. The best choice is Aragorn, without doubt, Cheiftan of The DĂșnedain, the last pure blooded 'Mannish' race in Middle-Earth.
Another note - about Aragorn's intentions and temptations. We know that he was very strong-willed in terms of resisting the Ring (for example, Frodo gives him the opportunity to take it from him at Amon Hen), but he often talked to Arwen about his hesitancy..
For example: "The same blood flows through my veins, the same weakness", "My path is hidden from me."
Only until we hear the line, "The Sword That Was Broken, shall return to Minas Tirith", do we are beyond doubt of Aragorn's intent.
(In the books, this intent is clear to see from the outset)

Yes. The intent was clear, the question was always whether intent was enough, whether those who were either evil or weak would put too many obstacles in the path.
Or actually (since this is MIDDLE earth, not ILLEARTH) how the obstacles would be turned to advantage, how each evil machination would further the cause of the protagonists.

Hmmm, favourite would have to be Legolas. Even BEFORE the films came out, I remember how cool I found him to be during the battle of Helms Deep. Haldir was cool too. I don't like Aragorn much, though
Hmmm and did anyone else notice (film) Sauron's strange resemblance to Zurg from Toy Story (or Zurg's to Sauron), or is it just me?

My favorite would have to be the four hobbits Merry,Pippin,Sam, and Frodo. Then my second favorite is Gandalf and then i like Faramir, which is played by David Wenham from Van Helsing.
I loved the movies. Ive read all three books. My favorite movie would have to be third one because some really awsome seens in it and music.

I loved the witch king in the books, but in the movie they made him look like a complete sissy. So in the movies my fave would be Aragorn, but in the books it's still the witch king.
Or I could just go rebellious and say My favorite character from the books in the necromancer-- but then again he wasnt really a character, now was he?

The Necromancer was certainly the most mysterious character, if you read The Hobbit. You could expand that and say that character was Sauron himself, so he is a real character, in that sense. The Necromancer by himself though, has very little to him.
