I think Jaws counts as a horror film. What does everybody think of this film? SourceI think this film was quite good. It gets a bit more terrifying when the Jaws music begins. The music is what makes the film more terrifying. I wouldn't say this film is really scary as all you have to do to avoid the shark is to not go in the water. I haven't seen any of the three sequels to this film, knowing Spielberg didn't have anything to do with them may give a hint there not so good.

I believe it was this film that caused sharks to hate Robert Shaw for the rest of existence.

I love Jaws... I've seen it at least 20 times or something, lol....
But it's sad that sharks got a bad rap for this film.... oh well.
But I'm not sure if this counts as horror, in my opinion.

Jaws is a classic, and the music made the movie. I always thought it belonged to the horror category. Mara, what would you classify it as?

Jaws is more of a thriller, which is closer to horror then it is science fiction, so this board is fine. Thrillers are welcome in this board as well. I saw Jaws when I was a kid, but unfortunately by that time I had already been desensitized to movies of the same genre. I really enjoyed, and to this day will watch it when it comes on AMC, but it never did scare me like it did it's first generation's audience. My brother is 16 years older then me, I forget how old he was when Jaws came out , maybe 9 or 10, but he said when he watched it when it came out, it scared him to death, despite the fact we live no where near an ocean. He'd have nightmares that Jaws was in his room at night. I think we have to remember that when Jaws came out, nothing like it had ever been made before so it scared and shocked a lot of people. Jaws, after all is the movie that put Spielberg on the map.

But I suppose it could be loosely classified as a thriller, lol. Anyway, back to the discussion... Even thought they barely got the movie made (they had problems with the fake shark), I think that it's a pivotal film in the realm of movie history.

first generation's audience. Way to make me feel old, Myke! lol I was about 5 when I first saw Jaws...and it was in a drive-in theater, so the screen was extra big. As you can imagine, it scared the daylights out of me and provided several months worth of nightmares. I've watched it about a dozen times since and it just amazes me how well it stands the test of time.

Even though compared with today's special effects/movies, I think it's still pretty awesome.. Because it's more about the people in the film. The shark is merely their environment.

I saw it as a kid, and because of the horror films i love it didn't really scare me - but i remember the first time when the head came floating out the hole in the boat i did leap back! So yeah that was one bit that did get me!
As well as the music, Schneider andDreyfuss were very good too and also made the film for me in a big way. One of my favourites scenes is when they're all singing "Show me the way, to go home, I'm tired and i wanna go to bed.." as the boat gets mysteriously bumped/attacked etc. You can feel it working between them three in that scene really well.
And there's some great visual shots like when he sees the shark on the beach and it does that long, clever pann-in/pannout shot at the same time! Or my favourite with following that where the kid on the inflatible gets it and you see this huge spray of blood in the air eminating from the water!

I really don't see where the current special effects buys you that much in a horror movie (Sci-Fi and Action are the only genres I see as having advanced much). All it does is add to the realism of the gore. Suspense and surprise are more factors of the score, directing, editing and acting...and that hasn't advanced that much since Jaws. However, Jaws is exceptional piece of work in all four of those categories. And Myke, 6 years may not seem like much to you, but I am 25% older than you are. ;D

What's so fun about watching a lot of bloodshed? I mean, if I was surprised by Jaws anymore, I'd probably get more chills hearing the Jaws theme onscreen then I would with anything else.

That is exactly why The Others is one of my favorite modern scary movies, and why Jaws will always be better than Deep Blue Sea.
