Oh, for the ad free question. .. . This is Patrick Clinger's official response. .. . Dear ProBoards Members,
Ad-free is currently unavailable due to PayPal locking our account inappropriately. We are attempting to contact their people to get the account reinstated ASAP. We apologize for this inconvience and hope to have everything back up ASAP.
If this issue is not resolved before April, all boards that purchased ad-free for the month of March will have no ads displayed on them until a replacement solution is available.
UPDATE: 4/30/04
We are currently in the process of setting up a merchant account to process ad-free payments by accepting credit cards. Boards which were ad-free in April will again receive our ad-free service at no cost for the month of May. We should be able to accept new ad-free members by the end of this month.
Patrick ClingerToo bad I didnt get ad free before tihs happened, I would have had 2 free months I havent reset XFWL's ad free credits and it remains to be ad free. I asked about changing them over from there to here, but I was told 'No'

Yeah, there are still 4 credits left over there. I tried to argue my case with Proboards, about there being no official policy on moving them, since both boards are registered to me, but I lost my case. I appreciate it.

so I'm only out $28 then. No biggie, it was ad free for over 2 years, which this site should be as well.

I agree, I think it's finally time to take it to that level.

I finally figured out the problem here without even realizing it.
So far in the past 2 years, whenever the to many connections error popped up all the time, there was a big virus attack on the Internet. And guess what, once again another big virus/worm and proboards is hit yet again.

And guess what, once again another big virus/worm and proboards is hit yet again. Oh no... This might be unrelated but yesterday I opened my computer and - only when I am connected to the internet - I get this: You have a parasite on your computer and MUST clean it (or something)... yes or no. Of course I press the "no" button because this is apparently a trojan horse. I can´t get rid of something called wupdater.exe and adware-keenvalue AND Virtual Bouncer (that´s the one with the announcement that I have a parasite). They all installed themselves onto my computer and I can´t delete them. I sent it to Avert Labs... McAfee and they give me some webpages where I can submit some data (zipped, of course) and all this hassle I don´t need. Anyone having this problem? I guess not... *sigh* Errr. sorry, if I was off-topic. *looks at the main topic box* Yes, I definately was off topic. LOL

Valderra install ad aware and spyware blaster(do a google search for both to get websites) and install them and run update defs then run them.
That will cure your spyware problem. Run a virus scan to see if you really have a virus as well, I have gotten those type of things before and when I run a virus scan nothing shows up.

I've been sweeping my system twice aday for virus' since this outbreak, as I download alot of things almost on a dailey basis.
As for the virus effecting our sever, I do recall Patrick saying something about someone, or something attempting to attack them, with a virus. I briefly read over it, but didnt think much of it at the time. I don't think the thread is up anymore though.

Run a virus scan to see if you really have a virus as well, I have gotten those type of things before and when I run a virus scan nothing shows up. I have no viruses. I use McAfee Online VirusScan and check regularly. And I also have Ad-aware that finds spyware and such. And my McAfee virus scan can find this trojan (it is a trojan because I checked with McAfee) but the exe files cannot be cleaned nor deleted. McAfee´s AVERT Labs say that it is either a potentially unwanted program file or joke program with their current DAT files and engine. *gulp* I have the feeling it might have been installed when McAfee was updating itself, which it does automatically. It´s not a problem, all it does is bring up this silly message when I boot up my computer, but only when I am connected to the internet. It only does it once and not again until the next time I reboot the computer. I tried to get hold of a chat support person today but couldn´t get hold of someone. Will try again tomorrow.

That doesn't sound right Valderra. If I got those kind of messages saying I have a trojan and they can't remove it, its time to format and start over(not that I am saying you want to do that) because I don't care, I'll be damned if I have a trojan on my PC. Unless its the kind I want to use that is

Valderra it really sounds to me like you have nothing more than some spyware/adware on your computer...I dont think its a "true" virus....because I have had those same kind of error messages and once I run spybot and clean my system i am fine. even if you have an adware system I would try spybot because its really great and its free...and besides searching for spyware it searches for other invasive stuff too...and even has a "file shredder" that can shred files that normally can't be deleted. It's well worth the download IMO.

A return email was sent within a short time and they said that because it is a spyware/adware problem, they can´t do anything about it but advised me to go to the SPYBOT site where I could download the tool Seek&Destroy for free. Well, I clicked on the link, downloaded that mean mother and let it run. Sure enough if found not only those that I mentioned but quite a few more. I ticked the ones I wanted deleted AND IT DELETED THEM FOR ME. YIPPEEE !! ;D Well, I am so excited... after I done the destroying business I rushed over here to tell you all about it. And for those who don´t know the site where Spybot is at: www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=download

Valderra, did you click the update definitions tab on SpyBot?
If not do it and update your defs and run it again, they are always usually adding defs every couple weeks. Treat it like your anti virus software, check for updates weekly
Glad that you got rid of it though. Just keep it up to date and you not have to worry about it ever again
