The Merovingian is one of the most interesting characters in the trilogy, in my opinion. He does not appear too much but he does play a key role: he is keeping the keymaker trapped, he wants to steal the eyes of the Oracle, he keeps Neo trapped in the train station... It makes me wonder what is his motivation and most of all what or who exactly is he. We know he is one of the oldest programs in the Matrix, but do you think it's possible that he was once like Neo, one of the chosen people?

Like most people (or programs ) who use force and exploit others for their own benefit, I think the Merovingian's prime goal was simply power. HE didn't much care for humans, and didn't much care for the Matrix itself, so I assume he was trying to survive comfortable and that would take power if you're on the agents' wanted list. But he is a program, the only way he could have been of of the chosen ones is if Neo himself was a program.

But he is a program, the only way he could have been of of the chosen ones is if Neo himself was a program. Which would lead back to the old Neo dilemma. However it seems he did play an important part in the mission of all the other chosen ones. There is a moment when he tells Neo something like he isn't like his predecesors.

He could just be a senior citizen of programs.
