All Terminator movies start with time travel. In the first movie a human travelled through time and became the father of John Connor. The situation is confusing - John Connor is stuck somewhere between the past and a future which probably exists. Both the humans and Skynet have time machines. Every time any kind of Terminator shows up from the future, or from a parallel universe its opponent does the same at the same time. How do the humans know that Skynet has sent another Terminator unless both are using the same machine at the same time. Since it has been established that Skynet is some elaborate computer virus not some machine controlling robots, rather making machines self aware and making them 'believe' that humans are their enemies. The matter of time travel has not been elaborated upon Why should not the anti-Terminators not have a device which once stuck to the evil Terminator, sends him back to where he came from. How is it, it is one way trip to the past and not a two way trip go back to the future or to some parallel universe or dimension. The battle scene at the start of the movie - makes it look like it is taking place on some other planet in the distant future.

Interesting question.
First, as to how the humans know when Skynet is sending Terminators back; John Conner would know since he experienced those events in the past. Or... they may have hacked Skynet somehow with a spy program, or have a re-programmed Terminator working as a spy. We really don't know, but that would be something one would imagine the new trilogy will explain since it is set post-judgment day and revolves around John Conner and Kyle Reese.
The reason they cannot return to the future is because there is no time machine of which to send them back. Time travel seems to be a difficult thing to achieve in the Terminator universe, probably using almost all available power in Skynet's reserves. I think mobile devices to send the evil terminator back is beyond the capability of the human resistance. Remember, unlike their Star Trek counter-parts who has that kind of technology available, the humans in the Terminator universe are struggling to survive. It seems like they're lucky if they get to eat a meal, let alone have portable time traveling devices.

John Conner is a child of the future and the past - he probably has time travelling abilities or is in a state in which time does not exist at all.

A kids dad is from the not so distant future and the mom is from the 'present - which is now the past', would that not be a crazy mixed situation? If two people are from the same time there would be no such problem, but when the when the father, would not the kid have inheritted some time travelling abilities.

A kids dad is from the not so distant future and the mom is from the 'present - which is now the past', would that not be a crazy mixed situation? Yep. But that has no affect on John. Huh? Exactly where would he be inheriting these "abilities" from? Certainly not his father, since Kyle Reese never had any innate ability to go back in time. He used a machine. That's like saying a kid would inherit the ability to fly because his dad flew airplanes.
