Ever wonder how they got from Archer's Zippered Jumpsuit to some of Kirk's crazy TOS outfits? What about the pajamas they wore in Star Trek: The Motion Picture? Hehehe! What about the sudden reversion to a more "traditional military style" uniform in the following movies? Why did they abandon those outfits only to later resume the jumpsuit (minus the zippered pockets) for TNG?
I'm curious to hear your thoughts on the evolution of Starfleet's Uniforms. Your ideas can be logically inspired or pure nonsense for nothing more than pure comic relief. I have my own serious theories, but would rather wait to post them because I don't want to taint anyone's imagination with my preconceived notions.
Get those brains working and share some ideas! I'm super interested to hear what you all think!

TO me, the zippered jumpsuits on Enterprise remind me of the coveralls that I used to wear in the Navy. On my ship, when at sea, we wore them most of the time, unless on watch. In port, we wore dungerees.
Submariners wear them all the time.
Thus those jumpsuits would be an ideal uniform for Enterprise as they would be multipurpose and would be confortable.
The ridicoulous outfits for TOS, I think maybe Starfleet wanted a change, and decided that colored uniforms for the crew would be better to have so that someone new onboard a ship would know the difference of the uniforms and where they stand in the scheme of life on the ship.
As far as the "pajama" uniforms of the motion picture, again, I think Starfleet simply wanted a change in style and went with that. Its not really uncommon in the modern military either, to change uniform styles. The Navy changed the style of Dungarees(they are no onger bell bottomed, and don't have pockets in the front, but look like regular pants now), the Army has changed the thickness of their uniforms to allow the body to sweat more easily as well. Again I think they were just trying for a change in the Motion Picture.
Afterwords they went to the uniforms I like. More formal, better looking with the rank beiong worn on the sleeve. Those seemed to be confortable, as it was a pull on short, with a red coat.
The uniforms on TNG, although nice, seemed out of place after the uniforms of Star trek 2 on. It seems Starfleet again went back to the jumpsuit style uniform for confort and conviance as well. Although the pips on the collar are a nice touch, I just dont see those uniforms being easy to put on either, or to wear either. You can always see how often Picard, Riker, etc always seem to keep re-adjusting the uniform to make it feel more confortable.

There is nothing I can add that haent already been stated by DS9, except think of this. .. .
Looks how the U.S Army dressed in The American Civil War, then during WWII, the Vietnam, and now in Iraq. True, alot of it has to do with being in action, but take the officers uniforms for example, they changed as well. I think over time everything changes.
I too have noticed that the TNG crew commenly adujsted thier uniforms, they look very uncomfotable. If I had to choose, I'd choose to wear the jumpsiut uniforms.

Kind of an interesting side note or bit of Trek Trivia here.
I noticed DS9 mentioned how Picard and Riker were always readjusting the shirt part of their uniforms. Patrick Stewart did this so much throughout the series, that (before he died) Gene Roddenberry gave a name to Stewart's "shirt jerking motion. "
He called it, "The Picard Manuever." Pretty funny, huh? I actually don't know which came first, the Stargazer episode, or the naming of "The Manuever," but at any rate I thought it was one of the funniest behind the scenes moments except for the actual blooper reel. I read in an interview somewhere that "The Picard Manuever" actually became a running joke on the set that lasted the entire series.

I read somewhere that the first time it was shown on camera, it was an accident and Stewart had adjusted it thinking the camera's had stopped recording.
After they re-shot the scene, when they were editing it, Roddenberry actually liked it better when he had adjusted it so they left it in, much to the chagrin of Stewart, who became the victim of the long running gag Speed mentioned.
They did seem to fix the uniform problem on DS9 though. When they changed the uniform style on DS9 from the red to grey shirts, they also fixed the problem with the other style, because no one was ever caught re-adjusting them over and over.

Here's what i think. 1. During "Enterprise" theres no need for military stuff clothes as tehy are 1st time explorers so the jumpsuits are the style they had in mind for normal space clothing. 2. War with Klingons, so they got such clothing designs in TOS. 3. TNG after the war, its back to the old jumpsuits, but to even it up they got jackets now. the grey ones.

My favorite uniforms are the Grey ones, seen in recent films, post Voyager being lost. I think those look nice and realistic.
