Have you noticed that the series seem to have the strange character that isn't quite like the others, and matures and comes into their own over the course of the series?
In TNG we had Data. Data is unique, one of a kind, then he meets Lore, and contemplates his existence. He tries to become more human, and often he seems almost child like.
In DS9 we had Odo. Again, seemingly one of a kind, unsure about his origins, and he tries to fit in with the solids. Of course eventually he learns about the Founder and all, but he's one of a kind to Starfleet and the Bajorans.
In Voyager we have the Doctor. In may ways the Doc is almost like Data, with the obvious differences in physical form (physical vs holographic). While the Doc doesn't necessarily want to become human, he still wants to expand beyond his original programming, much like Data did.
Seven of Nine eventually joins the crew, and in many ways she can be compared to Data as well.
In Enterprise, I guess the odd one would be T'Pol, as she is always struggling to live side by side with hew human crew mates.
I'm not sure if TOS had a strange on, Spock was Vulcan, but he didn't really stand out as much as the other strange ones did when it came to being so different, and almost dependent on the others to grow closer to humanity. What do you think?

I have to agree. Also in most of the serieses there is a character that doesn't necessaraly have a rank among the crew. In TNG its Wesley Crusher, in DS9 its Quark, and in VOY its Neelix.

And Seven of Nine. Good observation, 0 of 0.

I noticed, but I noticed it as an "only one of its kind" character, who is always trying to understand humanity.
Spock: Only non human on the ship (that we've seen). Fascinated by humans and their emotions.
Data: Only android in Starfleet, and one of only a handful in existance. Fascinated by humanity in general, and longed to become part of it.
Odo: For a while thought to be only one of his kind. Fascinated not just by humanity, but solids in general.
The Doctor: Only non-living being on the ship. Like Data, he is an artificial intelligence made to look human, while ultimately longing to truly be one.
Phlox and T'Pol: Only aliens serving on any Earth ship. Both view humanity with fascination.

What about 7 of 9? She is also trying to gain back her humanity, and learn more about human customs.

In the case of Data, Odo and the Doctor, it definitely was a vehicle for exploring what it meant to be a sentient being. As for being human, once you get past the shallow alien characters of TOS and TNG, and into DS9 and Voyager, virtually all of the alien species are used to explore humanity. From Garak to Quark, and Kes to B'lanna Torres, all of them explore what truly separates humanity from the animals.
