When Chief O'Brien was stationed on the Enterprise, I know he was transporter chief, but exactly what was his duties other then beaming people up and down?
As seen on DS9, he was a brilliant engineer who could fix just about anything, so what did he do on the Enterprise? Was he in charge of keeping the transporters functional? If so, why him and not engineering? Did he have a crew?
And finally, wouldn't he have made an excellent number 2 to Laforge on the engineering crew?

He would have made a good number 2 to LaForge(quoting what xkamelx said). But I'm not sure if he did have crew or not. A little digging wouldn't hurt...But I'm not sure where to start, though...

I always wondered why he was never in the Enterprise engineering dept. One minute he's working transporters, the next he's Chief Engineer on DS9... in just a few short years. It was such a smooth transition that I didn't even think of it till much later while DS9 was still airing new eps.
As far as being Geordi's #2 ... I don't know, those 2 have such different styles I'm not sure if they'd "mesh" well. Maybe that doesn't make sense. Picture how Odo and Worf interacted when Worf came to DS9, if it helps to see what I mean.

That's a very good point PurpleEyes about O'Brien's and LaForge's styles being different, like Worf's and Odo's.
By O'Brien's own admission, he was "bored" on the Enterprise, and was obviously over qualified for his job. I wonder how he got their in the first place, and wonder why he didn't put in for a transfer.

I thnk that O'Brian would also be in charge of keeping the transporter room up and runnning an would also be a engineer. I think that he is a regular engineer of the crew that just put him in charge of a specific part of the ship like transporter of deflector control.

That makes good sense. I guess on the Federation flagship they would want the best for each department.

Of course getting to a good starship is like getting to a good university. Getting the best of your class in the academy gets you to a better ship. If you get to a better starship you have more opportunities like first contact with a new alien race.
