This thread is basically for Dillson, Favorite and me. Dillson and Favorite has never seen Deep Space Nine, so the three of us are going to watch it together, and I'm going to post the back story of things they may need to know before watching it.
There are 5 main parties involved.
The Federation is the UFP (United Federation of Planets).
This the group Starfleet (Earth) is a part of. It is made up of countless worlds whom are an alliance for both defensive capabilities, and for trading. Basically the good guys.
Bajor is a planet close to Cardassia Prime. Bajor is a peaceful and spiritual planet. For the past 50 years or so, Bajor has been occupied by the Cardassians of Cardassia. This is not unlike Nazi occupied Europe, as the Caradassians committed vile war crimes against the Bajor people. Recently, a Bajorian resistance rose up, and Cardasssia withdrew. However, Bajor is not a member of the Federation, but becomes an ally of the Federation at the start of DS9
Cardassia - As explained above, the Cardassian Empire is an evil empire. Their acts of war crimes is documented to some small extent above. Consider them the Nazi's of the Trek galaxy.
The Dominion - The Dominion makes the Cardassians look weak. If Cardassia is Nazi Germany, then The Dominion is the Soviet Union x's one million. They conquer every world they come across, and are relentless. Lucky for us, they are on the other side of the galaxy so it would tale 70 years for them to reach us, but unfortunate for us, a wormhole is discovered that links their space into out own.
The Romulan Empire - At the start of the DS9, the Romulans are still somewhat of a mystery. Earth had a war with them some 300 years before the start of DS9, with only a few encounters after that. The Romulans are enemies with the Federation, as well as enemies of the Cardassian Empire, but peace treaties has been signed, and a Neutral Zone puts a barrier between Federation and Romulan Space.
Deep Space Nine is a space station owned by the Cardassian Empire. The Cadassians called it Terok Noir, but once they left Bajor, they abandoned the space station. The Federation claimed it as they decided to put a Federation presence in Bajor space to help Bajor recover from the Cardassian occupation.
Once the wormhole to the Gamma Quadrant was discovered, they moved the space station near the worm hole to manage it's traffic.
Below is a map the Milky way labeled with the 4 quadrants. Earth resides in the alpha quadrant, while the Dominion resides in the Gamma Quadrant.
