Just saw this movie last night. It was pretty cool! I'm not too much of a Vin Diesel fan but he really was good for the role. I didn't know that the character Riddick appeared in another movie besides The Chronicles of Riddick (not that I've seen it but...). The movie is about a space ship that transported a dangerous convict, Riddick, which crashes on a deserted planet. Once they're there they discover an abandoned research site and have to deal with the mysterios death of crew members. They discover that the planet is populated with creatures that only attack in the dark, but they also discover that an eclipse is about to take place. They rush back to the crashed ship to take batteries for a ship they found at the abandoned site, but it's too late as the eclipse takes place and the alien creatures come out. The only solution they find is heading back for the good ship, holding up lights, so they don't get attacked. Most of them die during this, so the only ones to leave the planet are Riddick and two crew members The one thing I adored about this movie was the planet they were marooned one, it was so nice and that blue sun made it look so unreal. The only thing I didn't like were those aliens, very disgusting. I think they could have showed less details about how they ate the humans

The first time I saw this film was ages ago, and I have watched it since then several times. I think it's worth watching it at least twice. The first time to get to know the characters (some of who will be in the follow up film: The Chronicles of Riddick), and the second time to concentrate on the plot.
I have seen both films, and have always preferred the first one, Pitch Black.
Oh... and I am a Vin Diesel fan. ;D

I always have to watch a movie at least two or three times to get really into it. First I pay attention to the characters, then to the dialogues, then I focus on both. For Pitch Black I focused more on the characters, mainly Riddick and Carolyn ( which I didn't expect to die, that shocked me ). If they ever air it again, I'll sure watch it, it is well worth

I have seen it on British SKY again the other day, after they showed 'The Chronicles of Riddick' for a while. And yes, Pitch Black ends a little unexpectedly. I can usually guess who is going to live and who dies, but if I get an unexpected ending, even if I don't like the fact that someone I wanted to live dies, I get much more satisfaction from the film, because of the surprise ending.

I've seen this film many times and I defiantly prefer this to the Chronicles of Riddick. Pitch Black is a film I can watch many times and still enjoy it.
I like the part where there running to the ship with all the lights around them. Slowly one by one they get killed which isn't too nice but oh well...
When the main woman is looking at the orbit of the planets and finds out the planet will be eclipsed I found it very funny when Riddick says, "I hope your not afraid of the dark."
Throughout watching this film i would of thought the main woman and Riddick would of survived, seeing her getting killed was a huge shock.

Yeah, one thing I liked about Riddick was his sense of humour. I really liked that line and the one where he tells them that it's not him they should fear on that planet. The movie was pretty intense during their walk for the ship, you couldn't help wondering who would be next. I was shocked too when she died. Throughout the whole movie I was convinced that Riddick and Carolyn had some feelings for one another and thought they might end up together. for example when he was about to leave with the ship when he locked them in the cave, I was pretty sure he wouldn't go without her and he would eventually save them But well, as Valderra said, a movie that ends in a way you didn't expect it to is a good movie

I was quite impressed with Riddicks moves when he went face to face with one of those creatures. He put his face in between the creatures eyes and moved his face to match the creatures. Doing this made him not visible to the creature which is brave but its Riddick... hes knows what hes doing.
Now you mention it Kmylove there were signs there something might be going on between them. ;D

Too bad the second alien came, maybe if it didn't Riddick would have gotten away and the movie would have ended in another way

I actually like both Movies, 'Pitch Black' was excellent, very dark (excuse the pun) and creepy, 'The Chronicles of Ridick ' although not as exiting as PB still had a intresting story line and some wonderful effects...plus good looking Karl Urban * swoon*

Kmylove, if you liked Pitch Black, I suggest checking out Aliens if you ever get a chance, although you may want to watch Alien first to get the back story. Alien is the original movie and Alien s is the sequel. Aliens is a little like Pitch Black, and while the creatures in it are scary and disgusting, they are not over shown like the creatures in Pitch Black. I liked Pitch Black. I remember going to the theaters to see it, this was before I knew who Vin Diesel was. Pitch Black was a nice change from most of the movies coming out at that time, I was fairly impressed with it. I too didn't expect Carolyn to die either. However, I liked it as it was so unexpected I also liked the Riddick character. He was sort of like the anti-hero of the movie; again something else that was rare in films at the time. They never had a plan to do a follow-up to Pitch Black, but the popularity of Riddick was massive, thus the reason for The Chronicles of Riddick, another movie I thought was good, but that's a discussion for another thread.

I'll try to check up on the Alien movies once in my lifetime I admit I never actually knew that Pitch Black existed. I knew of the Chronicles, but I thought that was an independent movie, not a sequel to something. The character Riddick was interesting he is supposed to be the bad guy in the movie but wends up saving everyone. And I think he had feelings for Carolyn This is a movie I wouldn't mind seeing again.

If I remember correctly, while Pitch Black was a good movie, it did very poorly at the Box Office. This is likely why you never heard of it until now. It did poorly at the Box Office, but it gained a cult following which heavily increased DVD sales and rentals, with a lot of people loving the Riddick character. That, along with the fact Vin Diesel became a superstar later on due to other movies, is the reason for Chronicles I think.
