*before I start: I looked through the nine pages two days ago but don't recall seeing it, and did a search too to be sure but nothing came up, so I hope it hasn't been discussed before* Myke post in The Neutral Zone reminded me of the movie Contact. I really liked it. It was so impressive for me how they decoded the message from outer space and were able to make the instructions for building that space travel sphere. I was a bit mad that no one would believe Jody Foster character that she had actually traveled through space. I really loved those scenes when the sphere was transporting her. But I did miss the opening scene and it's unique sight.

I thought Contact was an excellent movie, and have heard great things about the book, so I'm going to try and read it soon. I think the whole idea of detecting an alien signal with instructions on how to construct a ship was brilliant. When I first saw this, I was highly eager to find out where that ship would go. This movie fascinates me. lol I too was a little annoyed that no one believed her, poor Foster. :PI also loved those transporting scenes, so intriguing.

The first thing I need to say is READ THE BOOK! Contact was an excellent movie, on its own. However, the story Carl Sagan told is a whole lot more...and seeing how it delves rather deeply into the underlying mysteries of the univers, I almost guarantee it will be more to your liking, Myke! Seeing as both of the previous posters were disappointed with how Dr. Arroway (Jodie Foster's character) was treated after the trip, I will clue you in that the book goes deeper into the aftermath of the trip. It isn't as simple as her riding away with the preacher.
One more thing worth mentioning: According to my Astronomy professor at SUNY Binghamton, when Sagan contacted Kip Thorn during the research phase of the book to discuss viable interstellar travel mechanisms, he spurred Thorn into thinking more deeply on the subject, to the point where Kip formed and published a new theory on wormhole physics.

Contact is a great movie. It takes a serious and hard look at how we're not alone in this universe. I have tried to read the book but it good too technical and science textbook like for me.

I'm going to eventually read the book to, but probably not until this fall. Summers are very busy for me, especially this upcoming summer.
