Luke was the one meant in the prophecy who would bring balance to the force.....or at least that's what I think. If you read the exact words as pointed out....he only said to confront Vade not destroy him. I think Luke helped bring balance back to the force when he got Vader to turn back to the good side and destroy the emperor. Luke completed his training and never did he actually kill vader....he simply turned him back away from the dark side. Yes Luke did turn back the light side and then Vader killed the Emperor bringing balance back to the force...

But then the balance was destroyed when Vader died. Don't you see, then it became 1 jedi and... nobody.

Luke's rise to Jedi has always troubled me, even before the prequels were released. It just seemd to easy for him to become a Jedi with such minimal training, even if he did have Medichlorians out the yin-yang...
Anyway, here's my take on the cave at Degobah and why Luke had to face Vader before he was really a Jedi...
Recall in Ep I where Qui-Gon is trying to convince the Council that Anakin should be trained as a Jedi. When he says that he will take Anakin as his Padawan, he is reprimanded by Yoda because he is already training Obi-Wan. Then we find that Obi-Wan considers himself ready to 'take the trials'. Now, I don't really know what these 'trials' are, but it makes sense to me that the trials one must endure would be specific to each Jedi candidate... Maybe something along the lines of facing their worst fear and overcoming it, thereby helping to ensure they are not Sith material (fear leads to anger, anger to hate, and hate to the Dark Side). The cave at Degobah with the surreal scene where Luke faces Vader, then the face of Vader goes away showing Luke's face, is, to me, a sort of training to help prepare him for his own Jedi trial.
When Luke finally does confront Vader and overcomes his own fears of turning to the Dark Side, he becomes a Jedi.
