30 years ago today, Star Wars Episode IV A New Hope was released in the cinema. To this day, Star Wars - A new Hope is the 2nd most grossed film of all time, only one spot behind Titanic. So I ask, in honor of this anniversary, how and when did you discover Star Wars? My earliest memory of Star Wars was seeing Return of the Jedi when I was about 5 years old. I was immediately captivated, and was an instant fan! A New Hope came out 2 years before I was born, and I was only 1 when Empire came back. This was in the golden age of VCR's, so I obtained copies of the original trilogy, and watched the 100 times each, all the while building an extensive collection of Star Wars memorabilia. So my first memory of Star Wars when seeing Return of the Jedi at age 5. So, to honor this anniversary, I ask; How did you first discover Star Wars? Shae your stories?

I first saw Star Wars when it was showing on the TV when I was 4, the sight of Darth Vader is not easy to forget.

Though I did not realize it at the time, my first viewing of Star Wars was a couple clips while I was half asleep/awake when I had strep throat Christmas Break of my sixth grade year. The TV was just on and the only scenes I remember fully are the trash compactor scene and the chasm scene when Luke and Leia swing over. It wasn't until much later (haha, like three years or so) in '97 when the SE's were released in the theaters that I saw all three movies in their entirety. And my dad is partially to blame for making the suggestion, but my sister and I, mainly me, took it and ran with it, haha. I recognized the scenes I had seen years before as being from ANH. Since then I have been a crazy Star Wars nut, even going on their website in '98 and '99 when the first prequel was coming up. I tried to gather all kinds of information. I saw it twice in the theaters. Then later for Episode II, since I was so excited about the first prequel, I think I watched that trailer online even more times. Even on our dial-up at home... but I think I had memorized the liens in the trailer, I watched it so much. That was 2002, so I didn't get to see it until a month later, because I was at the end of my senior year of high school and hence, wasn't allowed to see opening night (it was on a Wednesday, I think). For Episode III, I was so excited to be able to see it at midnight because I was in college and classes end in May. Ironically, the day I moved back home was also the same day/night of the opening midnight showing. So I was unpacking the truck like crazy and running around, so excited I almost forgot to eat dinner because I was leaving in a few hours to see the movie. I still remember how I felt sitting on the floor in line near the concession stand with my dad, just waiting until they would let us in the theater to sit down. No other midnight showings I've been to can compare (even LotR: RotK). I'm ranting, lol. Anyway, I've been a SW fan for about ten years now and even though I came into it "late," I think I'm as much of a fan as anybody out there. (I'm just not a freak with action figures. )

Mara, I saw all 3 re-releases in the theaters, it was an awesome experience. The only thing I regret is seeing Return of the Jedi first as a kid, so I never experienced the shock of Vader telling Luke who is father was. I too was excited when I heard they were making an episode 1, it seemed to good to be true. Out of the 3 new ones, I was more excited about Ep III more than anything. I remember StarWars.com releasing the video "A Hero Falls" and I watched it over and over. It was amazing: starwars.com/episode-iii/release/trailer/10.htmlThat video mesmerized me.

I don't recall the first time I "met" Star Wars. It seems like it's always been there. I do remember a picture book I enjoyed when I was little (4 or so) - it was sort of a Star Wars A-B-C book. ^_^ We had the 3 movies on video tape and it was pretty worn out by the time I got the (late-1990s updated) versions on video. As for the prequels, I "knew" that Lucas was wanting to make a Star Wars Ep. 1 way back in 1988 or 1989 or so... I read National Geographic "World" Magazine (a National Geographic for kids, basically) and I remember a little bit about SW, and also that George Lucas had a broken arm in one of the pictures. One of the few times I've gone to the movie theatre alone (I'd rather go with someone or not at all) was for the re-issues of the movies - specifically, A New Hope. I was enthralled. It was almost like "watching it again for the first time"! Here's to MANY, MANY more years of Star Wars, and to future generations of fans! ^_^

I also wasn't surprised at that, either.. but it was my own fault, lol. I remember when they all came out and various companies were doing promotions. Well, one was Pizza Hut and since all three SE's came out, almost around the same time, they had trivia and such on their boxes. Well, one was about who was Luke's father and the other, his sister. So I read those trivia Q&A's (among others) and so ... found about it all before I saw the movies.

I think I was 3 or 4 when I was first introduced to Star Wars. I remember the little green guy in the murky forest. Which I come to know by name later in life when I became a Star Wars freak. But that's my first memory of the Saga.

I think my first memory was of Luke and Vader in the Emperor's throne room with the dark lighting. Back then that was very suspenseful to me, and turned me into a Star Wars fan!

I think my first memory was of Luke and Vader in the Emperor's throne room with the dark lighting. Back then that was very suspenseful to me, and turned me into a Star Wars fan! I remember that one too. To me back then the carbon freezing room was pitch black and all you could see were the lightsabers and the shapes of Luke and Vader made by the dim light . I know that definitely caught my attention.
