SG-1 crash landed thors ship in the ocean because it had replicators on it,and they had used the stargate to escape by beaming it aboard, and then afterwards the russians found it and used it to devlop their own stargate program, and we wound out using the BETA gate (the one found in Antartica) well my question is,how could we make the earth symbol work as the point of origin for the BETA gate, when it originall had a diffrent symbol as its point of origin, which was something that looked like the shape of a stop sign, with a solid line under it,so they couldnt just change what the point of origin was, could they?

I do believe the point of origin symbol was added to the stargates by the Goa'uld. Somehow the Goa'uld manage to scratch in the point of origin symbol in their stargates. Since the Goa'uld never had the Beta stargate, the gate wouldn't have the usual point of origin symbol.

but if thats the case, then how did we get the original point of origin to work on the beta gate still? Remember the Ancients built the stargates, the Goa'uld just stole the technology for their own use, thats it.

Because the Goa'uld just changed the symbol on the gate and on the dhd, not the way the gate uses the symbol.

Where did you get that from? Anyway, the reason why they could get the Beta gate's point of origin to work on Earth is because it IS the point of origin for Earth. The gate found in Antarctica is Earth's original gate.

Chris, that's my recollection too, that the gate couldn't dial essentially its own point of origin.

every planet has a point of origin, if u put a stargate on any one of these planets, it will use the planets point of origin.

And if there are two gates on a planet (like there were on Earth for a while), they can't dial each other because they have the same point of origin.

Look a planet is a planet yes they drift but stargates make up for that in tempral shifts. But the basis of what im saying is the gate is on earth so if you dial earth you dial earth. At is Still At.

Would it be possible for a Stargate located on Earth or any planet dial to its own point of origin. But I think it would be like just like calling your own telephone number - you will always get busy tone, because you are dialing to yourself which cannot happen. So when using the Stargate on Earth woudl result in a rebound effect, there is no way to go to Earth when you are already on it.

I dont get the point of origin part. there there are thousands of planets, each one would have its own point of origin yet there are only 38 symbols on the DHD so that means there are either shared points of origin or only 38 planets.
