Hmmmm... I really cant get my head round this one. If the light is not reflected the object should look black... I dont see how it makes it look small instead. I dont understand how things that are behind it and should be hidden are seen instead, which they must be if this device makes things look so small they are very hard to see. It just really doesnt work in my head...

If James Bond can have an invisible car, why cannot the Enterprise be made invisible using 24th Century technology - this would not violate any treaty with the Romulans about the Federation not making cloaked ships, or would it? The Federation and Romulans and Klingons signed some sort of treaty that forbade the Federation from ever developing a cloaking device. Remember, when the Defiant was first used on DS9, they always had a romulan onboard to operate the cloak.

Frankly, I don't get it either, Mo. No matter how little light bounces off something or no matter what material they use on an object, it will always be the same size AND visible, i.e., you can't see what's behind it.
You can put a black cloak over your body in the dead of night and make yourself invisible in that way, but to try and make something "almost" invisible in broad daylight ? Hmmm...
Additional: And regarding that cloaking device... I can't blame those aliens for not wanting humans to have the knowledge of how to cloak themselves. Anything that falls into human hands will automatically be considered a weapon and how best to use it.

I tend to think that if a cloaking device were to ever be possible, the amount of energy it would take to make it work would negate the advantage, as it would have to give off some sort of heat.

Thats a very good point actually Voyager... never thought of that before. Im sure eventually a way of disguising that heat would be found though.
And Val, yes, infra-red goggles would be used.

You can detect a stealth bomber with infra-red goggles, even though it doesn't appear on radar. It may refract radar waves, but it cannot refract the waves while it is passing through air at all, because air in the atmosphere is not at a constant temperature.
