I agree, when when they say the "universe" I assume they are speaking of the known universe, or the cluster of galaxies we consider to be the universe. If we define the cluster of galaxies as the universe in the infinite plain of space, then is the rest of eternal space empty, or are their other universes/clusters? There are other "universes" out there. Matter is infinite. Therefore one can safely assume there are an infinite number of multiverses.

While that is an amazing concept, it is kind of depressing in a way. Obviously Humankind will not learn all of the secrets of the universe in my lifetime, but it is a nice though to think one day we will.
However, since it is infinite, it will be virtually imposable to explore it all in this dimension alone, let alone the other theorized ones.

Then the rest of space.

Somehow giving a measurement to the universe makes it seem smaller. I've always thought of it as infinate but who really knows how big it is, all we can do is estimate. Perhaps there are other universes out there too perhaps we are part of a great network of universes which are in turn a part of something even bigger...

I think the universe as a whole is, in fact, infinite. I think when people, scientists, talk about the size of ou universe being measured, they mean the size of the known universe. I think out known universe is a cluster of matter, a cluster of galaxies all in one group. Then you may go through 9999 9 billion lightyears before you come across another cluster of matter and galaxies. In away it's almost like the space around us, a glaxy here, a galaxy there, but no one infinite group of matter. I don't see how the universe can end, I really believe it goes on forever.

but you don;t know.....just think of like the delpic expanse in Enterprise where even the laws of physics don't work....what if the universe does actually end and outside of it there is literal nothingness...not even a molecule exists outside of the known universe.

But what is nothing? How can "nothing" exist? One theory that I heard, is that there is no vacent space outside of our known universe, but a form of space that we will never be able to comprehend, where the lasw os physics do fail to exist, and time exists, but in a way we could never imagine. Pretty vauge description, but that's basically how I read it.

The universe is just a cluster of galaxies, space itself is just three dimensions. That is how space is infinite. But it is not empty. It has energy moving through it. No matter how far away you get from things, you are always experiencing the force of gravity, which is a form of energy. And light energy never completely fades out, it just becomes less and less visible, so it still exists in the infinite space. And because energy can be proven to be infinite, then, matter can be proven to be infinite. So no matter where you are, space is not empty.

Great! they have found how big the universe, which means we are sitting inside a bubble and there is something outside which we cannot observe.

LOL those crazy scientest.
I also belive it to be infanint. I can see one possibility, if it is not ifinante. When you get to the end, you would just appear at the other end. It would be kinda like a loop hole.

>:(Does that mean that the size of the universe is the sum of the all the galaxies which have been observed? Those which have not been observed or cannot be observed because they happen to be too far away - then it only means the universe is many times bigger than we can possibly imagine with several dimensions which know nothing about. - or whatever.
