I ask this because of one scene.... the scene of the Jordan's reaching the Derelict, and Newt's dad being attacked.
I can understand why this scene was initially cut. Part of the suspense of the movie is we do not know what is happening on LV-426 until the Marines figure it out. When watching it for the first time, anything could be plausible. Maybe when the Marines and we the audience arrives, the colonists are all okay, but the power is gone, or anything. By us seeing the facehugger attack Newt's dad lets us know for sure, and some of the mystery is gone when the Marines arrive.
For the rest of the deleted scenes, brilliant. I love them all, and wish they all were a part of the original release.
And while the scene with Newt's dad is good, it just seems like it would take some of the mystery out of it for first time viewers.
What do you think, and which version do you like better?

I prefer 'Aliens', not the Director's Cut. The thing is, the cutters know what they are doing when they leave out certain scenes. Sure, those extra scenes give us a little more to look at, but aren't really essential to the movie, and often don't help the film.
One mayor example is 'The Abyss'. I watched the extended edition the other day - never saw it before. And I really didn't like the extra footage. It just got stupid, telling us that the aliens were concerned about how we conduct ourselves, and giving us a message, saying something to the effect of: Don't do it again. I cringed when I watched the extra scenes, and hope never having to watch them again. The film as I knew it is fabulous and, as I said before, the cutters knew what they were doing when they left out those extra scenes. In fact, I have yet to see a film where I think: Oh yes, the Director's Cut version is much more enjoyable. Same goes for Aliens.

So far I've only watched the director's cut and think it would be better. I think this gives a clear picture on what's going to happen and builds up your anxiety. It does this because the marines have no clue what they're up against but you know in your mind what's going on on LV - 426.

I first saw the director's cut and loved it. I watched it a million times so i knew it off by heart. Then i watched the origional, and i got the "they cut the power" part and thought "wait, wtf? what happened to the parts with the sentry guns?!"

Usually, the one you watch first is the one you like best and accept. I often find that when I have watched a film and then get to see the Director's Cut, I prefer the original version I saw first.

I disagree with you Valderra, those cuts aren't always necassary the right thing at the time. Some are due to length of the film, some - okay aren't needed as they don't help the development of the film, but someare quite neccasarry to put back.
I don't think Newt's parents scenes gives to much away, you only see a face hugger, and the things like the sentry guns are neccasary as it without it the film looks somewhat evern. I and i have seen the standard version on TV soooooo many times. Also seeing Newt's relationship with Timmy helps you understand Newt a little more too.
I saw the standard version first, but i will always prefer the director's cut over the standard every time.

I disagree with you Valderra, those cuts aren't always necassary the right thing at the time. Well, we all have different tastes and opinions, and that's a good thing, otherwise they couldn't scam the viewers by first bringing out the standard version on DVD and then, some time later, bringing out the Director's Cut, so you have to pay for the same film twice. Personally, I didn't feel the extended version was necessary - I was more than happy with the standard version. And I felt the same with The Abyss. The Director's Cut was overly long and the extra scenes were unnecessary and often boring. But that's just my taste.

Whether or not I prefer the Director's Cut over the original cut... I'm still glad they release Director's Cuts. Natural Born Killers is a good example of this. The Director's Cut of NBK is almost a completely different movie than the original cut. It's good, yes, but I prefer the original, but am still glad they release the Director's Cut as it gave me a new perspective of the movie.
The other day someone in the IMDb Aliens board was about to watch Aliens for the first time. He asked if he should go with the theatrical release or the extended version. I told him for first time viewing he should go with the theatrical release. I still think the scene with Newt's dad takes some of the mystery away. I think for first time viewing we should see no more, or know no more then Ripley and the Colonial Marines know.

yeah i agree myke. but i guess if i had to choose, i wouldve watched the directors cut first, because i was too young to understand it anyway when i first watched it. (you know how when you were young all you cared about was the cool action parts )

I do, I was 7 or 8 when Aliens first came out in theaters, and fell in love with it instantly! A few friends and I would dress up in our army gear as kids, and play 'aliens'.

Aliens directors cut is my favorite. I know the uncut versions is a lot tighter and cleaner, but I still perfer the directors cut. It is a good thing they have both versions to wet everyone appetite.
