Do you think the xenomorphs are intelligent animals? If yes, how intelligent? Obviously they do not have a culture passed down to generations, which is one current qualification to possess intelligence.
I think they are smarter then the average animal, but do think they are animals as opposed to sentient beings.
The aliens are good problem solvers, in my opinion. After all, they did find a way into Operations on Hadley's Hope to attack the marines on LV-246. This goes beyond instinct I think. I do not think there is an Earth animal that could have figured out a way into there after they realized they couldn't get past the sentry guns.
Also, the aliens in captivity in Alien 4 discovered a way to escape. They seemed to realize the effect their blood has. This is also seen in AVP when the drones helped the queen escape here shackles.
However, I also believe they get lucky sometimes as well. For example, it has been said the xenomorph from Alien wandered into Ripley's escape pod on purpose to escape the destruction of the Nostromo. I do not believe this, I believe this was by chance, as he was near the pod already when Ripley last saw it before she tried to stop the self destruction. He did seem to be sleeping, something he wouldn't have done if she was planning a strategic attack on Ripley. He may have thought he killed all of the humans, and went to hibernate, like the aliens in Aliens once they thought the got all of the LV-426 colonists.
Some also believe that the xenoporph in Aliens intentionally entered the Dropship to kill Spunkmeyer and Ferro to prevent the survivors of the hive battle from escaping. I don't believe this. I think he was following the marines from the hive battle, and once outside the complex he saw the dropship and decided to investigate. I also do not think he killed Spunkmeyer or Ferro, but incapacitated them to take back to the nest, and the crash happened when it attacked Ferro.
Then there's "They cut the power" - "how could they cut the power man, they're animals?" I do not think the intentionally cut the power. It is more likely to assume that while crawling in the ceiling to infiltrate ops, they came across some wire and just went through them, ripping them apart.
But then they do seem to be able to communicate with the Queen. In Aliens the Queen backed off two drones when Ripley was in the nest with Newt threatening the eggs if they were not allowed to leave. Obviously the queen saw the threat, and the drones understood here orders to back off.
So I do think the aliens are smarter then just a monster, or an animal, but do not think they are as intelligent as we are, or as some people say.
