The Ring has most often been compared to a drug, for reasons stated below. However, I have thought about it and have also come up with love at first sight. Now nobody knows what Tolien truly wanted the Ring to symbolize (and it is certain that it is a symbol). However, we can still compare. The Ring is a drug: This one is what I would go with. YWhen you are first introduced to it, you feel is the greatest thing in the world. You start to feel better than you ever have and use it as much as possible in order to feel better. However, after using it long enough, you start to deteriorate and you realize that this is doing more harm than it did good. You would like to stop using it, but you find that you just can't separate yourself from it, and when you do try to stop, it keeps calling to you until you are eventually tempted to start using it again. Love at first sight: You find that this is the one that has everything about it that you love. You start doing everything with it, and for awhile everything is going great. However, as time goes on you realize that things just weren't meant to be, and you shouldn't have fallen in love with somebody who isn't compatible with you. However, you still imagine this person/thing as the love that you first saw at the beginning, and thus cannot let it end. I'm quite proud of my analogy, by the way. What do you guys think?

It makes sense both ways. It's like a combination of the two, the way I understand it. Almost like a paradox I suppose...

they both work....though I think the drug analogy is better....especially since the ring tends to actually control your mind and make you do things you normally wouldn't do....and the way it physically destroys your mind and your body both.....

The drug analogy is good, BUT drugs were not the scurge when Tolkien wrote the book as they are now. So, what is the ring? Tolkien admitted the ring and Sauran had nothing to do witht the Kaiser and WWI, so I don't know what it means. Then again, his books are sold in christian book stores, so could that have an implication?

i really liked your drug analogy. while i agree that the ring most resembles a drug, and the rings bearers most resemble drug addicts... i also agree with trooper in the fact that drugs were not as widespread in tolkiens time as they are now. though he probably did see quite a few lives ruined by drugs in his wartime experiences, im not sure how much that would have influenced the creation of the ring. but liek you said, all we can do is speculate ;D

I think the ring was a pint of beer. More you use it you feel more powerful. I`m Sauron lord of beer. ;D

I agree the ring is like a drug and you hate it but love it at the same time.

It's more of an addictive substance. (Drugs) You spelt Tolkien wrong.
