I don't get the first movie. I'm not sure what exactly was going on, like why those group of people were traveling, and how that golem came into play...

Well, Sauron had created a Ring of Power that, if under his control, would take over the whole world. Sauron had been "killed" and the Ring had been found by Gollum, who then lost it to Bilbo, who then gave it to Frodo. Sauron then comes back to "life" and discovers where the Ring is. He sends the Ringwraiths to go searching for it, so therefore Frodo must run away and bring the Ring to Rivendell. Gollum also knows where the Ring is and is out to get it. Well that's as simple as it will get. Hope you understand now.

Basically the first movie is 1/3 of one large movie, being all three movies. The first movies sets up the story, Bilbo Baggins returns to the Shire with the Ring, Gandolf takes it from him and entrusts Frodo with it to take it to Mordor to destroy it. That is where Frodo and his 3 hobbit friends are traveling, to Mordor to destroy the ring, and it shows thier adventures along the way, and the people they meet (ie: Legolas, Aragorn, ect)
Basically the first movie sets up thes stroy for the ones that are to follow, everyone metting everyone, the backstory set, ect.
Gollum, as FantasyLover said, was once Smeagol, a hobbit who had the ring, but was transformed by the ring. He follows the hobbits around in hopes to steal the ring, his precious, and almost succeeds in part 2, only for a few seconds though before Frodo and Sam capture him, and make him lead them to Mordor.

I see, so where does the first movie end, what is that place with the big table and all those (elves, dwarfs, wizards, etc.) people sitting at?

That's the Council or Elrond. It's a gathering of leaders from every major free race on Middle Earth. They were there to discuss how they were to bring baout the Ring's destruction.

The first movie ends after Gandalf 'seemingly' dies will fighting the beast on that land bridge, and falls into the abyss with it. If you remember they split up into 3 different groups (I think, been a long time and I'm not a LOTR expert), it shows them al going thier own way as the movie comes to an end.

If you want to know more about Gollum, read or rent The Hobbit. It will explain a little more about this character. It is also the story when Bilbo found the ring

Probably the most famous chapter ever written by Tolkien was called "Riddles In The Dark.." which is in The Hobbit. This chapter explains a lot about Gollum and his character.
Simply by watching either The Two Towers and The Return of The King, you can learn a lot about Gollum and Sméagol.
Another useful chapter for finding out about Gollum is "The Shadow of The Past", which is in The Fellowship of The Ring, Book I.

I haven't read them for awhile actually, I should read them again. The thing is, I spend such a lot of time talking about LOTR on the net, that I can't help but remember loads of things, hehe.
