If it´s OK with everyone, how about we tell the story. We could each - those of us who have the books - copy a few lines or a paragraph from the book. Yes? It would also be good for those who haven´t read the books yet - they can read it here bit by bit here.

I'd like to add my own notes in to go with the book.
This is the first chapter of the first book of the the volume of The Fellowship of The Ring. This chapter is indespensible in the way that it introduces some very important characters, or at least characters that will become important. There is also a link between this chapter and the first chapter of the prequel to The Lord of The Rings, The Hobbit, which is An Unexpected Party. Notice the link?
Anyway, if you have only seen the films and you want to want to read the books too, the first thing that will strike you is the time-period, which is vastly different to that of the film. For readers who have read The Hobbit, you will realise that Tolkien is still in 'Hobbit-mode', and his style of writing is very similar to that of his style in The Hobbit. Basically he is just continuing on from where the Hobbit left.
For those who haven't read the prologue or The Hobbit, it is quickly realised that there is some peculiar about Bilbo Baggins: he has treasure and possesses (apparently) perpetual youth. We meet Frodo Baggins as respectable gentlehobbit, though he is a Brandybuck, and Brandybucks are 'queer', so we know that Frodo is perhaps no ordinary hobbit either. Though Sam barely plays a part in the chapter, we learn a bit about him, too. We know he is a common gardener, working class, but he enjoys Bilbo's tales of dragons and elves and has even learnt his letters, so he is not quite 'ordinary' either, judging from his father's disapproval. (And later in The Two Towers we are told not many hobbits learn their letters.) Gandalf is immediately seen as wise and trustful, though mysterious as well. Though some people think hobbits are a simple people, I believe this chapter shows them as complex individuals. We see them as thieves and gossips, and displaying vain, arrogant, humorous and angry behaviour.
Tolkien exercises a bit of his humour in this chapter, ranging from Lobelia's silver spoons (and other gifts from Bilbo to the Hobbits, the the plural of Proudfoot being Proudfeet and well as Bilbo's quote: I don't know half of you half as well as I should like; and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve. It's rather confusing don't you think?

I remember this being my favorite chapter because he makes it so you just can't dislike a hobbit. They became my favorite creatures in literature very quickly and they still are to this day. The Hobbit mainly focuses on Bilbo alone and not the whole Shire like this chapter did.
This also shows Tolkien's very unique writing style as he tells it like he's telling a story to his children in front of the fireplace, as oppose to most author's "tell it like it is" style. I fell in love with the book right away.

Anyway .. yeah .. what was I going to say? .. Oh yeah! I think we should add our favourite bits perhaps, and/or parts that we want to comment on. One problem: For me, that doesn't narrow it down at all. I'm still going to be commenting on EVERY part of the book ..

No... we make a thread for each of the three books - at least. See how far we get. Now... is anyone continuing the story I started or are we already into spamming. LOL I hoped this thread was purely for writing down the story...

I think Dill covered everything that needs to be covered. Now people are supposed to give their opinion and analysis of the chapter.

Well, I don't mind either way what we do here. It would be nice to add some comments to the text, particularly if we are going to post every paragraph.
Do you think we should divide each thread into books rather than volumes? Ie, Book 1, Book 2 .. Book 6 etc..

It looks like I'm going to have to scrap this idea before it begins. To go through with this, may possibly be copyright infrengment, and against ProBoards Terms of Service.
And obviously we do not have written permission to repost chapters from the LOTR books on a public message board for others to read, instead of buying the books on thier own.
I do apalogize, but this isnt my decision, it is ProBoards'.
