If it´s OK with everyone, I thought we might also get the first story down, The Hobbit, which went before LOTR and is, in a way, essential because it tells how Bilbo finds the one Ring.
I don´t want to be the only one writing this story so are there any other members here who own the book and are willing to write it down with me?

The Hobbit is the only one I own thus far, and I'll do it. I'm also gonna start a thread, to talk about the Hobbit chapter by chapter soon, an idea Dillson had.

As Dillson mentioned earlier in a previous post, The Hobbit is told in a very different style than Lord of the Rings. It is more of a fairy tales that you would read to your children in front of a fire (I'm using that style in my own fantasy novel that I'm writing). Using this style brings the reader closer personally to the story as it makes you fel like Bilbo is on old friend of yours. You are able to picture what is going on in the book with ease, and it's probably the most amount of fun you'll ever have reading a novel.

I of course, love all the books and The Hobbit is one of my favorites. I read it before LOTR naturally and fell in love with Middle-Earth right away. Its certainly different from LOTR as FL said in style and what not. It has that fairy tale feature to it probably because Tolkien wrote the story as a tale to read to his son. Who knew that the words "In a hole there lived a hobbit" would set the tone for an entire genre?

"In a hole there lived a hobbit" is my favorite line in literature. I think all great series need the great opening line. LotR has that, Wheel of Time has that whole "The Wheel of Time turns and ages come and pass" thing, and Star Wars has "A long, long time ago in a galaxy far, far, away." It really sets up the whole series, IMO.

So I gather we have enough peeps then who write down the story with me? I was kind of hoping to use this thread if to write down the story, so I will begin. If you have any other ideas about it Myke, let me know.

This chapter introduced us to the world of hobbits. A world most readers will never forget and a world that some would love to live in. It tells us a bit about the Shire and about the personality of hobbits. The subject, of course, is a normal hobbit named Bilbo Baggins. All Bilbo wants to do is smoke his pipe, live peacefully, and make sure his round green door goes unharmed.

Not sure from where the part you wrote is from but it´s not from The Hobbit.

Errrm... can you continue the story from where I stopped? Not sure from where the part you wrote is from but it´s not from The Hobbit. I'm confused about your system. Normally somebody summarizes the chapter and everybody gives their opinions and analysis on it.

I'm confused about your system. Normally somebody summarizes the chapter and everybody gives their opinions and analysis on it. Why are you confused? I didn´t make this thread for a summarisation of a chapter. I clearly said, as in the other thread I started, that I thought we can write down the story here, chapter by chapter. If others want to talk about it, they can do it in another thread. So what´s the problem? I thought it might be a good idea to retell the story so that those who haven´t read it yet, can do so and we, who have read it, can read it again...

When I am able to continue/start on 'The Hobbit' I'd also like to offer my opinions on what I've read thus far, offer thoughts, and maybe questions. I think that will motivate me more into finding time to read, as interaction with others on particular intrests keep me interested in alot of topics. Make sence? Half of the fun of experiencing something is sharing it with others. Be it in this thread, or another, (which dosent matter to me either way) that's what I'd like to do!

The time that I enjoyed reading The Lord of The Rings the most was when a group of us Tolkienists decided to read at the same time and post our comments on our forum (www.lotruk.com). It was really fascinating to learn different viewpoints of people on every chapter. And we're always here if there are any questions you want to ask. BTW - Do you think I should start a Tolkien 'Question & Answer' thread, dedicated to anyone that has any queries about any of the books?

Go for it Dill. Should be a lot of help. Because there is so much to learn about the books that aren't evident to somebody who is just reading it by themselves like I did.
