Well... I would have to say the book was better, except for the two towers.... that converstation they had in the great hall... but still, the movies were good.

I remember TORC used this topic as a parody thread. OF COURSE the books are better. Every book is better than the movies that were made because of them. The books are where the story is created. Not to mention how they go into so much more depth than the movies. I can give about 100 different reasons, but alas, it is late.

I love the books, and I love the movies. It is hard to pick a favourite because they are different. I suppose the advantage the movies have are the fact that they can show music, and emotion in a way that the books can't. But the books can reflect things that move YOU in your own way. I saw the movies before I read the books so it is even harder for me to decide, because whenever I read the books, I use the characters and places from the movies for my image of them. Maybe If I had read the books before seeing the movies it would have been different, but the way things turned out, I haven't got a favourite, they are just different ways of showing a story, and it's the story I love, not the way it is shown.

The books of course.....although the movies are great and it is nice to see the action and the story take place live action instead of just in your head.

The films were well done but are no comparison to the books. I would take the books any day.

I'm going to struggle to keep within the word limit here .. EDIT - I'm not on second thoughts.
The books are your own world. You can read them and invisage things how the author wants you to. The author can paint a world for you to explore and be immersed in. For a film, the director shows you what there is. There is nothing more than that. You can't manipulate what is on the screen, because what it is, is what it is. In a book you can plunge deeper into the world that you read about. You can halt at a certain point in the book and let your mind wander (I've done that many times with Tolkien's books). It's so easy to just forget the world around you and just focus on what you mind is imagining. The books give you a license to roam freely and live out your imagination. That is not possible with a film. The film takes you on a journey. A linear one, like a train. A book is like an off-road Land Rover. You can go anywhere you want. The book feeds your imagination. Obviously, the better the book, the further off-road you can go with your Land Rover.
On second thoughts, I'm not going to post a huge post. It's 4 o' clock in the morning over here. I can't really concentrate on what I'm typing.

While I'm a huge fan of both the films and the books I'm most certainly going to have to say books on this one.

I have to be honest and say that I liked the movies better . I didn't really get into the books as much as the movies.

Obviously the books are better because there is so much storyline that never made it into the movie. However, seeing the Battle of the Pelennor Fields unfold before my eyes was amazing.

Well at this point I'd have to say the movies, but that is only due to the fact I haven't read the books! <~~~ crazy huh? Yeah I know, I'm not sure why ... just never heard of them until the movie came out.. Although I did know about the Hobbits? I do have the book of the fellowship and the Two Towers, just haven't read the yet. From what I hear they are much better... but the only problem is once you see the movies it's hard to really discovery the book as it should be read.. if that makes any sense.

No matter how many times you read the books, there is always something new to discover. If you haven't read the books at all yet, then you are in for a treat regardless of whether you have seen the films first or not. The only way to discover how the books' detail are so superior to that of the films, is to find out for yourself. You will find that the films are ten collective hours of brilliance. The books are a whole world of brilliance - that will last you however long you want it to last.

I think the Movies are better than the books. I have read The Hobbit, Fellowship of the Ring and the first half of The Two Towers. The movies didn't show everything that happened like the books did, but I like seeing things over reading about them (I'm more of a visual person).

The movies were some of the best book adaptations I've ever seen. Beautifully done. I was amazed at how well the character of Gollum was realized. As a Tolkien fan from way back when I expected to be disappointed in the movies...and I wasn't (except for an off note here and an important theme glossed over there).
But the books are untouchable. The movies don't come close.

THE BOOKS ARE THE GREATEST BOOK'S EVER WRITTEN ALTHOUGH THE MOVIE WAS WELL PORTRAYED FROM THE BOOK. BUT THE MOVIE STILL MISSES VITAL CHARACTERS FROM THE BOOK!. TOLKIEN RULES!!!!. HIS LEGACY LIVES ON!. ;D
