For those of you who read, and were LOTR fan previous to the the movies, what was your impression of Gollum, the movie Gollum? Did you have an idea of what the movie version would look like, or did you go into it wanting to be surprised? Was he how you imagined him when reading the books? I never read the books, I've only seen the films. So no matter what happens in life, unfortuantly I'll never be able to change that. I'll never know the feeling of going into the movies for the first time having read the books, and being familiar with the story, and I wonder about these things from time to time.

Peter Jacksons's Gollum was probably one of the more accurate portrayals of Tolkien's characters. Technically, he was a marvel - a truimph of motion capture and computer texturing. Unlike such characters as Faramir and Denethor, Gollum/Sméogal's conflict was shown in a more subtle fashion; the way Tolkien showed it. With most film, characters tend to be, one way or another, a bit one-dimensional or ridged. Gollum's complex character was displayed very well by both the physical script and also by the acting of Andy Serkis.
Having read the books before seeing the film, the feeling I often get when watching the films (for the first time) is supised - mainly because it's not how I would have imagined it - but the beauty about Tolkien's work is that it is left up to your imagination a lot of the time, and the films are basically Peter Jackson's vision of The Lord of The Rings from his own imagination, rather than a universal account of Tolkien's masterpeice. That's impossible, because the story, characters and events are so complex that we will all envisionage certain aspects differently. Some people would have imagined The Lord of The Rings similar to how Peter Jackson imagined it, and therefore would have been a little less suprised than me, for example.
Gollum, being one of the most fascinating and complex characters, is a prime example of how your own imagination will make up a large part of what you see this character as. However, Tolkien was also a genuis of getting visions into your head exactly that way he wanted, and I think one such example is Gollum. Whether you watched the films first, or read the books first, you will have almost certainly have imagined Gollum with that voice that Andy Serkis gives him.

I thought it was a perfect portrayal. Starting in the hobbit Gollum was always being describes as a shrunken little thin creature warped and deformed by the power of the ring. He lived in the darkness which would give him big eyes....and he ate raw fish and other nasty stuff giving you the kind of vision of his tteth that was portrayed. They even got his craziness down when he started arguing with himself in the movies. The character was perfect.

I have to agree. Of all the characters, real and CGI, the two that came closest to my own imagined "cast" were Gollum and Gandalf. Bilbo was pretty close, too. But Gollum was right on the money, both visually and aurally. Sir Ian McKellen didn't exactly match my mental image, but he completely replaced that image. None of the other actors actually superceded what I've always imagined the characters to look like.

I don't really think that Gollum offers alot in the movie. I think that he symbolizes the evidentful fall of man and the effects of the ring in the people of Middle Earth.

I never read the books, and never thought I'd get to watch the movie, but he is by far my favourite! I find him very sweet with his "preciousssss" and all. Of course, he does look a bit scary and hideous. But he is sweet

After reading the hobbit i pictured gollum to have been more greenish in color, but PJ's Gollum is spot on to what I had imagined.
I actually have learned to pity gollum greatly. Especially that party in the return ofthe king outside shelob's lair when frodo says "i have to destroy the ring" and gollum's face just changes from pathetic weeping to horrible evil... right at that moment i really pity him.
