If we discount any issues we have with the accuracy of the films, or scripting problems for example, and we concentrate on one thing: the visuals..
(By that I mean sets, special effects, battles, costumes, weapons, creatures etc)
.. then what would you consider the most visually stunning scene or set of scenes in The Lord of The Rings trilogy? For me, the first amazing peice of special effects is the battle between Gandalf and the Balrog. Infact, both times they go to battle, the quality of the visuals are stunning. Elsewhere, I thought Lothlorien was very enchanting - a real Elven-haven - although we only see very little of it. The cave troll and the wargs were very nicely done, as were the various creatures from Mordor in the battle for Pelennor. The most breathtaking sight was seeing the Rohirrim pour out of Harrowdale on the way to Gondor, and once they reach Gondor itself; standing on the horizon as Minas Tirith looks on.

Wow, hard to choose. The first scene that really amazed me as har as visuals was Rivendell, sine that was the first building that wasn't midieval-ish. A very beautiful and enchanting building.
I have to say the best one though was the battle of Helm's Deep, believe it or not. It's really the first time you see a very large army for an extended period of time (you didn't really see much of the alliance). You were able to see the orcs the way they were meant to be seen. Intimidating and ruthless. Also, the fort itself was very well made. The location was perfect and so was the construction. Not to mention the horn was vary nice. And then the effects when the wall was destroyed was superb.

I have to agree with both of you, ecspecially FantasyLover. The first time I was really awed was the battle at Helm's Deep. Seeing that massive army approach was an amazing site, and seeing such things as 100 of them being taken out at once by the falling 'Ladder machines' (lol I don't know what they were called) was really well done. We saw dozens of then get squashed or tumbeled, and it was more then realistic. One would expect effects of that kind to me a little too computerish and not realistic looking, but Peter Jackson really stepped up to the plate, and did not let me down. As for my all time favorite visulal, I honestly couldn't fairly say right now. I would have to watch the films again to make a fair choice.

Well...i do agree with the Balrog/Gandalf scene as one of the best.....I would also throw in the scene where the Ents attack Isengard as well....seeing them go into battle and swinging their limbs and destroying things and the river that roars in and flushes everything out.....was overall another excellent scene.
