What I don't understand is why the TARDIS is a telephone box. Why is a Time Lord travelling in a machine and its outer casing is a telephone box. What is a Time Lord doing travelling in a machine like this? A telephone box will only look right in Earth. Why hasn't it got its only Time Lord outer casing.
If its been mentioned in an episode could someone please tell me. Dr Who wouldn't be the same without a telephone box but it doesn't make sense.

The story behind the Police Box is that when the Doctor went to the Earth in the 1960s, it chose that shape to disguise itself as and the chamelion circuit jammed. Since then the Doctor hasn't repaired it and so the design stuck. Does that answer your question?

He did say that no one notices it, yes, but he didn't say that he chose that form (all he said was that he liked it).

Yeah thats helps a lot The Thi.... erm um The Doctor. Why the name change I always liked The Thinker. Only people on Earth won't notice it. But when they transport to a very different world won't they think what is this blue box just doing here?

Clarification time!
The Doctor did actually repair the Chameleon circuitry at one point. I don't remember when, but I think it was the Fourth Doctor who did. He then changed the TARDIS to look like a church organ, but after that serial was over, he reverted it to the Police Box, and undid the repairs to the Chameleon circuitry, saying that he preferred that look.
And the Ninth Doctor made several references to that look for the TARDIS. Watch The Parting of the Ways: When Rose is being sent back home in the TARDIS, and the hologram of the Doctor is speaking to her, he tells Rose to just abandon the TARDIS, that no one will ever notice a box. Time will pass, and everyone will forget just a normal-looking police box off in a corner.

Acutally, that was the Sixth Doctor in the story 'Attack of the Cybermen'.
