I did some searching and found out what other choices the producers had in mind for the leading roles in the movies.
For the role of Morpheus, other choices were: Sean Connery, Russel Crowe, Samuel L Jackson, Val Kilmer, Gary Oldman.
Jean Reno was offered to play Agent Smith but turned the offer down in order to play in Godzilla.
Jet Li was an option for the role of Seraph.
And for Neo it seems that the choices were many: - Kevin Costner - Tom Cruise - Johny Depp - Leonardo DiCaprio - turned the part down because of all the stunts he would have to do - David Duchovny - Val Kilmer - Brandon Lee - it seems that he was the original choice when the brothers first had the idea for the movie, early in the 90's. - Ewan McGregor - Brad Pitt - Will Smith - who made it in history for turning this part down.
When I read through the list I tried to imagine how it would have looked like if they would have got the part and it seemed really weird. Which of them would you have wanted to get the part? Or are you happy with the cast?

I'm happy with the cast that came to be. I think they all had great chemistry. I also do not think anyone could have done Smith better then Hugo Weaving. His agent voice is amazing.
I was watching the special features of V for Vendetta, and they were saying how skilled Weaving is in dialect, how he can do dozens of voices and accents perfectly.
Out of the actors listed for Morpheus, I think only Gary Oldman could have done as good as Laurence Fishburne, but like I said, I'm happy the cast turned out to be what it did.

Yeah, Hugo Weaving made a perfect agent, his voice sounded very robotic and his face didn't show any emotion, exactly what a program would have been meant to look like. It would have been hard for Jean Reno to do the part, mostly because of his French accent.
