In the original, before Neo discovers what the Matrix is, and before he is unplugged, Agent Smith and his cronie agents detained Neo for interrogation. At that point, Neo was simply Thomas Anderson, a software engineer.
Ultimately, Neo is 'the one' but at this early point in time, if Smith had decided to kill Thomas Anderson, could he have done it? If so, would it have destroyed the Matrix?

If so, would it have destroyed the Matrix? Good topic, it makes one think... Hmm... At the time Neo was arrested, I don't think the Agents even suspected why Morpheus wanted him. I think they only considered him another red pill and decided to use him to get to Morpheus. But he was in their power after all, so they could have easily killed him, even if they had no idea who he was. I think that Smith could have killed, I don't see how something could have stopped him from doing it (like someone or something interfering since Neo was supposed to live). To answer the question I would say: So yes, I think that if Neo would have been killed then or at any other time before reaching the source everything would have been destroyed.
