The Animatrix is a collection of nine animated-style short movies which consist in side stories, prequels to the Matrix and connections between the first and the second movie.
Have you seen them? Are they worth a watch?
I have read the articles about them on wiki and they sound interesting. I would like to see The Second Renaissance ones, as they explain how the war started.

I've read some articles on some of the stories. Especially the ones concerning the part where the war began. I'm not going to bother watching them. I'm happy with the three films and so far of what I read it just didn't sound right and make sense. Are the people who created Animatrix the same people who created the Matrix films?

I entered whatisthematrix.com to double check before answering you that yes, it has been made by the same people, and it appears that you can actually download four of the episodes for free? I have to check this out. It appears to be The Second Renaissance 1 and 2, Program, and Detective Story.

Why did they bother creating the Animatrix in animation? Surely it would be more popular if it used proper actors. I wouldn't watch it purely because it is an animation.

Correction: The W brothers only directed four of the nine movies, the other five had other directors. Anyways, these short movies are really short! I just finished watching TSR 1, it only had 9 minutes. You know, when you get to see them you understand why they are anime, and not movies with flesh and bone actors. TSR is too complicated to be a real movie, it would need too much computer animation and it would look fake. Tomorrow I'll watch TSR 2 and I'll give more feedback But I highly recommend you to get them. It's a rare opportunity to see something like this given away for free.

I've just seen part 2 of TSR. It was really impressive. I recommend these two movies to everyone
