REDRUM REDRUM! Anyway... I love this movie... and although I don't think it's scary at all, I think it's still well-made and sometimes it does make you think. For instance, what's up with the end? Jack's in the photograph? It's been awhile since I've seen it the whole way though, so it's possible I've had the whole thing figured out, but have thusly forgotten it.

"Are you out of your fucking mind?" That line always cracked me up when Jack asked Wendy that at the bar, because it was obvious the only one out of their mind was him, plus the expression he had on his face is one of those Jack Nicholson 'crazy' expressions that only he could do. I agree, the movie was not scary to me at all, not even as a kid, but it is a very well made film, and tells a great story. Jack Nicholson did an excellent job in this movie. No one knows why he was in the old photograph at the end of the movie. Stanley Kubrick added that himself, and never gave an official explanation as to what it meant.

Along with Halloween this is one of my top horror movies. Great cast - OTT Jack, Scatman Corothers and the little boy, Danny Lloyd who was also excellent. The last for example when Danny runs into the twins and after Tony speaks to him - "Remember it's just like pictures in a book Danny, it isn't real", and tony stops talking/Danny puts his finger down Indicating tony) and there's just this wonderful look on the kids face of sheer anxiety, terror and outright being scared.
I couldn't stand Shelley Duvall as Wendy though, it just made me sympathise with Jack! Jack [Nicolson] is wonderfully over the top, but sometimes his delivery and facial expressions just kill me in this film.

Jack Nicholson is always great at playing the "crazy" people, lol...
Re: The end: Hm, really? I had always thought it was part of the mystery of the movie, haha....

I love this movie, and I actually liked Shelly Duvall's portrayal as Wendy ( although I think her Olive Oil in Popeye was better lol...) I too never found it scary but I dont think it was honestly meant to frighten more question a persons perception on reality, I think most people can relate to Jack's charter on some level, I know I often talk to myself lol...

True, true... It was probably supposed to scare you more thoughtfully, than outright with gore like some movies. And I resemble that remark about crazy writers.

I've read the book and I found it amazing. But I can't say the same about the movie. I found it to be far too different from the book. It just skipped some of those things which made the book ace. I didn't even have the patience to watch the movie until the end, I stopped when Jack went psychotic and evaded the kitchen.

Did anyone ever catch that TV film re-make? It's quite old now. Although it was more closer to the book, Jack running around with a mallet didn't quite do it for me and the boy playing Danny was a bit too "Hollywood" I thought.

oh no.... not a TV re-make, they never truely capture what the big movie versions can.

This is one of my favourite horror movies. I like the part where he says "hereessss Johnny!" and redrum redrum This is a classic. I've going to buy this on DVD.

I agree with Athene. The remake wasn't all that good. I know the movie didn't follow the book well but the gap between whats possible in literature and cinematics is wide. . Of the two I preferred The first one.

Heh, was thinking about the film again last night as I was sorting out my top 50 films ever (Used to be 100, currently goes up to 60 ), and today wondered - what ever happened to Danny Lloyd aka Danny in The Shinning? Had a look on IMDB today but it looks like he never acted again and has settled for a quiet life, possibly in teaching.
