I was thinking about some things related to the Matrix movies and the whole propechy about The One and the conclusion I got to is that Thomas A. Anderson wasn't necessarily the one the prophecy talked about, it wasn't something predetermined.
From Reloaded, from the conversation with the Architect we learn what the function of The One is, and we learn that it's something the machines willingly accepted into the Matrix, as it finally served their interest. But while they knew about The One and the existence of this abstract entity, I don't think they knew who would be the exact person that would take over this role.
This is why the prophecy was invented. Morpheus knew from the Oracle (another element of the machine world) that he had to find The One, that this person would be the one to end the war and destroy the Matrix. Thinking that The One would help save Zion and free the humans, the humans themselves would have a solid motivation for looking for the person who was fit to take over the role of The One. We know that before Neo, Morpheus has freed other people about whom he thought they were the ones the prophecy talked about, and that these persons didn't survive when they had to face agents.
So now it's Thomas A. Anderson, Neo's, turn. He is rescued and trained, but he is no more than a normal person. Even the Oracle confirms this:
ORACLE: But you already know what I'm going to tell you.
NEO: I'm not the One.
ORACLE: Sorry, kid. You got the gift but looks like you're waiting for something.
NEO: What?
ORACLE: Your next life, maybe. Who knows? That's how these things go.
And if we also take this into account:
MORPHEUS:When the Matrix was first built there was a man born inside that had the ability to change what he wanted, to remake the Matrix as he saw fit. It was this man that freed the first of us and taught us the truth; as long as the Matrix exists, the human race will never be free.
I think that in order for a "potential" to become The One, he has to understand how the Matrix works, all of its implications, to have a free mind as Morpheus put it. I think that these potentials have to surpass a challenge, a trial of life and death, in order to determine if they are The One.
For Neo, the trial was being shot by Agent Smith. With Trinity's help he managed to understand that he had a chance to evade his death, that dying in the Matrix doesn't necessarily have to kill you in the real life, he managed to reach a certain level of self-awareness that allowed him to control the system. Once ressurected ("your next life"), he was ready to fully follow the path of The One, as he passed his trial.
