I don't have cable, so I can't watch it during the original airing, but I have caught a few episodes (including the pilot) and thought it was pretty good. I like the immediate tension between the characters - with Atlantis things were far too harmonious at the start for a group of people stranded in another galaxy. My only complaint is the Eli character being too close to how you would imagine McKay at that point in life.

There are similar in some respects but McKay was a hardworking student that needed to prove to everyone else he was smarter than they were. Whereas Eli is smart but feels no need to prove it and lacks the motivation to do anything with his intelligence.

Thinking back on the references McKay makes to earlier achievments and the root causes of his issues with his sister, I still see Eli as a lazy and immature version. Taking an existing, well liked character and tweaking some personality traits is a shortcut that will probably backfire like it did in Atlantis (or was I the only one who thought Teyla was little more than a female version of Teal'c for the first season)
