2001: A Space Odessey, hands down. But then again, I am a Kubrick mark.
As for Dune, well, I felt it was better served as a novel. I thought the movie felt pieced together near the end. I saw it for the first time a couple weeks ago because, of all things, my History teacher used the 'Fear is the mind killer' quote to us before taking an exam.

2001 was good, but they had to much dead time in the movie that could have been left off though. I know it added drama to the movie, but it also put me to sleep lots of times as well.
I really wish they would make 2050 and 3001 into movies though, those were great books.
And they should remake 2010 as well, because I think with a director who read the book made the movie, it would have been so much better than it was.

I actually saw 2001 for the first time over the weekend...Well, parts of it...I sort of fell asleep during it (I was dead tired)...Hopefully TCM will replay it again sometime soon...It looked promising...And Hal's "death scene" was definitely among the most chilling in movie history (which says a lot considering it was a computer)...

I didn't think it was so much dead time in the movie as much as it was meant to be a visual showing. I am guessing you are talking about the scenes with all the music playing and what not, but that was there to show off 'the future' as it were.
Yeah Joe, you can get it cheap, and as a student of film, you will want to own it.

I understand why it is there Q, its just that todays standards, that would be cut first now.
It made the movie, and the music selection for it was great, but its still dead space though, and they could have cut atleast half of it and not ruined anything at all either.

I'll have to look for it next time I'm in Best Buy (should be January, when The Shield season 2 comes out!)...
It is definitely a visual movie, one that you really have to be willing to sit and appreciate, otherwise it will be lost on you...

Its not that it will confuse you Joe, its the fact that some of them go on way to long.
The scene where Hal kills the people in the suspension pods was well done, but it really didn't need to drag out for 10 minutes either though.
It is a great movie though.

I loved the movie because I love the visual effects, the rotating interior) and the music, which really made the film.
The Movie "Mission To Mars" has a scene that reminded me of 2001, when they were outside in space, trying to fix the breach, they had a classical score while the astronaughts were floating around.
To me that is TRUE art, visual art. Little things like that means alot to me, and a good musical score is a very important part of a movie.
Star WArs, for example, John Williams done an excellent job, from The Imperial March to Anikan's and Padme's love theme.
Same with Apocalypse Now, an excellent score, ecspecially with Jim Morrioson's "The End" as the opening song. Sets a good theme.

Its not that it will confuse you Joe, its the fact that some of them go on way to long. Right...By "lost", I didn't mean confusing, I meant boring...You need to keep the audience completely into everything that is going on...But when you have an extended scene of no dialogue and pretty much the same sequence of shots, it can become pretty boring pretty quickly...If you can get past that and appreciate the movie for what it is, you'll love it...But most film viewers, the masses, become bored really quick and likely do not appreciate this movie (nor ever could)...

To me, it makes the movie special, because that style is rarely if ever used today, but when you think about it, I wasn't even alive when the movie came out and I liked it, but if I had never been into Sci-Fi in general for movie tastes, I would probably find that movie long and boring.
A Clockwork Orange by Kubrick is another example of that style of filmmaking, but he left out most of the long parts and had scenes where nothing was spoken, but the music and scenes kept it interesting.

OK...my first comment...regarding Dune...cause i love the books....they are awesome. While the first movie was great for special effects.....it totally sucked! they left out way over half of what was in the book. you miss so much by not reading the book if u have only watched the movie. trust me..they should have made it more like 4-5 hours long to do the book justice....thats why i appraciate the sci fi channels remake. OK..now...I dont necessarily have a "favorite" sci fi movie...but 2 i love that i think a lot of people either dont remember or have never seen are...
1) The Last Starfighter- The first movie to use all CGI for its special effects and not models. Is a killer movie, with great actors, acting, one of the best stories I have ever seen and it is just a genuinely funny movie to watch. and it also spawned tons of rumors about whether or not atari actually released a game to go with the movie(which didnt happen...never made it out of production) A MUST SEE IF YOU HAVENT SEEN IT!!!
2)The Black Hole(Disney)- I just loved seeing the robots and stuff in that movie..looked like flying trash cans...but cool. and maximillian....the big red robot with the killer spinning blades. Another great underappreciated sci fi movie!

ok..asking what my most fav Sci-Fi flick was, is almost cruel..lol I have so many that I liked for diff reasons.. my brain keeps going from one to another but here is a brief review
1: T2, because I love anything that deals with Time travel, and the storyline was good, also the paradox of John's father being from the future and sent back to save Sara was a good plot builder in T1. T3 was pretty good though the female Terminator was just a bit over done in her abbilities, but I di9d love the end of it.
2: 12 Monkeys also dealt with Time travel and bio-pychos..lol another fav of mine .
3: AI touched me in ways that only a parent can understand, I cried when Monica made David leave, I know it was for his own good but the way he begged got to me,.. where do you draw the line fotr w3hats real or not. That little android boy for HE knew really felt that pain and anguish of his 'mother' abandoning him, it may have been learned behavoir from his programing but nonetheless it was real for him!
4: TNG movie Generations was woth it just to see Data looks at the screen and sees that the saucer section is about to crash and says " Oh Shit!!!!" I liked that part though I was a bit shocked that they crashed it in that way in the movie.
5: Pitch Black, I also liked for the dramatic use of spec-effects and lighting.
6: I like Mission to Mars the spec-effects were ok in that one till you get to the end and they blow you away with the Ancestor/Aliens and Gary Sinese's Character goes with them.
7: Resident evil the movie was good in the fact that I am really really creeped out by undead and the whole idea of the dead walking the earth. I like to watch scarey Sci-fi and that is something that scares me..lol
8: Dawn of the Dead the remake is the most recent kinda thing like that I have seen and I loved it..ecept for the end, but stated why i didn't like it in another thread * laughs and isn't gonna repeat it here*
I know there are more but I am getting tired and am gonna forgo typing more on this subject..lol

Those were some good picks!
I'm a huge fan of the Terminator trilogy! Have been since T1 came out when I was a kid! Hopefully they make a part 4, and Jame Cameron decides to come back as a director.
12 Monkeys is also a good movie. nothing beats Brad Pitt's performence when he and James Cole were in the mental hospitol, lol. It's also another movie where the bad guys (the visrus) pretty much wins, as Cole never finished his mission, but lived out his future as he remembered seeing it as a child.
Despite what alot of people think, I think AI was a great movie! That movie was one of a kind, and really deals with human emotion, and a few other things we take for granted. At least after several thousand years or so, David finally got to see his mother again. A the end, when they layed down on the bed, and she died again, did David die to, as they said for the first time in his life he went to sleep.
LOL Of course Generations was good, it's Star Trek! One thing I'll never forget is Picard standing over Kirk's grave.
Pitch Black's another good one, Claduia Black, FArscape's Aryun Sun is in it I beleive (Crichton is such a lucky guy!)
Mission To Mars is one of my favorite movies, just because of the feel of the movie. I loved when they were in space fixing thier ship, to that music. That was just before Tim robbins removed his helmet. Great stuff. The ending was nexcellent, seeeing the beginning of our life on Earth, and Gary Sinese 'going home' I would have went with him geven the chance.
Resident Evil is another good one, part 2 should be out sometime soon, picking up where part one left off, with her on the streets of the cursed EArth.
I still havent seen the new DAwn of the Dead. Perhaps when the DVD comes out!
