I ask. .. in your opinion, what is the absolute best science fiction movie ever?
This movie has to be one of a kind (yes remakes count), it has to have an ingenius plot, and has to have had made your imagination stretch beyond it's limits, as well as make you question everything around you. This is a tricky question I know, tricky enough that I'll have to spend some time on it before I offer my own question.
Please list your favorite sci fi movie(s) w/ a short description of the plot, and why and how it stretched you imagination.

Dune. To explain it would take to long. Just see it and you will understand And not the bullshit remake either, I mean the original.

I liked road Warrior, for the same reason why I like voyager, and the novel Swan Song (best damn book ever, I highley reccomend it). I enjoy post apocliptic Earth story's where the characters are living w/out technology and are on an adventure. I think the reason I am attracted to storys like that (Including my beloved Lord of the Rings) is because I spent several months in the Montana wilderness, living w/out technology (plenty of beer though . Every day we'd go explore remote parts of the wilderness, old ghost mining towns, prospecting in creek beds, ect. Waterworld was also good to me due to that factor. If it's a love or hate movie, then odds are I'll love it, as my movie prefences are not convential ~Myke

Hmm...this is a tough one...
My gut says Terminator 2: Judgment Day, one of my favorite movies, sci-fi or not...I think it's the closest thing to a sci-fi film that would fall into my top 20 favorites...

Yeah, I haven't seen Part 3 yet either...And the first Terminator, while a good movie, wasn't anywhere near as great as T2...There was just something about that movie that was playing on a whole other level...It was excellent in every way...Actually I think maybe I'll watch it again this weekend...This conversation has so put me in the mood...

James Cameroon summed it up best in an interview he did a few years ago after T2 was released. If he had the special effects that he had for T2 when he made Terminator, it would have been a 100% better movie. In the Special Edition Terminator, they included alot of deleted scenes back into the movie where they were cut from and it made Terminator a better movie because it explained not only T2 better, but the original as well. You have to remember Joe, Terminator was filmed in 1984, and the best special effects back then was the blue screen technology, unlike for T2 where they could use CGI to its then maximum. The best movie for CGI and filming though belongs to the original Matrix. Thanks to that movie, CGI took a huge leap forward, much like Star Wars did for special effects in 1977.

I will go with "The Matrix".
It was able to capture my imagination, which is usually a must for a sci-fi movie to me. The story was good and so was the story telling. Unlike the 2nd Matrix movie, the story can stand on its own and it had a satisfying conclusion.
RE: Dune
I have seen both Dune sagas. I thought both could have been done better. I liked the build up in the 1st movie, but felt the second half of the movie was too rushed. Better story telling towards the end would have really improved it for me. As a sc-fi fan, I liked both versions of Dune, but I also didn't consider them a must have.
For the 2nd Dune saga, they have followed up the original movie with a 3 part "Children Of Dune" mini-series. I have to say that series disappointed me. It was okay, but it didn't capitalize on all the storyline potential that was/is atleast evident to me.

I love all sequals, I never judge them by a single episode, I judge them by the whole thing at 1 go. Its all in the story action, etc. are just addons & description of what's going on. each part can't exist properly without the other shows I like: (I just show the main title, since I said I like all I don't have to say which part) Star Trek - Terminator - Matrix - Star Wars - Dune - Alien - Predator - Species - Titan AE - Transformers - Robotech - Stargate - M.I.B. - Back to the Future That's all i can recall but 1 most I respect most of all is "Star Trek" its the best story ever. Very realistic, & possibily no ending to it. If understood properly.

I'm the same way Vold. If sequels keep the story going that is a great thing, but sequals can hurt it as much as help.
Men in Black is the best example. To me, it seems they rushed #2 without really thinking of a great plot like the first one had, and just relied on the effects to carry the movie.

Man I totally agree with you on MIB 2, they rush way too much. simply get case, get k back, go to a crazy shop & mindwipe the 2 fans of theirs & stop the villain, now that is "boring" & uncalled for in a story.
See the way the MIB behave they mindwipe even those who are ready to accept there are aliens. if they keep doing that, then humans in their world
"WILL NEVER BE READY FOR LIVING WITH ALIENS OPENLY"
Those MIBs have a stupid idea of preparing humanity for aliens encounters. They need new protocols.

DUNEDUNEDUNEDUNEDUNEDUNEDUNEDUNEDUNEDUNEDUNEDUNEDUNEDUNEDUNEDUNEDUNEDUNEDUNEDUNEDUNEDUNEDUNEDUNEDUNE
Did I say Dune? Oh...I meant Dune. And just in case I wasn't clear.....DUNE!!!! Yes, Frank Herbert's incredible series of novels is the best Sci-Fi series ever. The only good thing about the original Dune movie was Patrick Stewart playing Gurney Halleck, and Sean Young playing Chani. I could've lived without the rest of it. Now, the Sci-Fi Channel's re-make was absolutely incredible. Of course, they botched Dune:Messiah and Children of Dune by combining them. But of course, we don't live in a perfect world and sometimes, things just get botched. Seriously, though, check out Dune for a great Patrick Stewart performance (And Sting as well!!!) and check out Sci-Fi's Dune re-make for a "true to the book" representation of what Dune is all about!!!
