This discussion kind of started on the action figures thread but I think it may be worth a thread of its own. O'Niel of the movie and O'Neill of the series. Are they the same person? Yes and no. There are some discrepancies in the backstories of O'Neil and O'Neill but they certainly are MEANT to be the same person. Their sons had different names. Their tastes in hats were different. And probably the biggest difference of all. One's a shattered man who doesn't care whether he lives and doesn't really put his team's survival at the top of his priorities. You can argue he was picked for the job of going to Abydos based on these qualities. A suicide bomber was needed just in case. The other will scrub a mission if necessary to protect his people. And would be damn sure that if a suicide mission were required that he was the ONLY member of his team in jeapardy if at all possible. But without the changes that occurred in O'Neil's outlook during the movie, how easily could O'Neill have evolved into something less morose, less dead inside? This website is worth a read. It's a comparison of the two characters and a good defense of many of the issues that people have raised about the original O'Neil and Russell's portrayal of him. members.lycos.co.uk/funfactory/oneil.html. There was an O'Niel as well? LOL I always wondered why I sometimes saw the name spellt with one and then with two "L"s. I always assumed that the name with one "L" was a typing error. Thanks for that link.

I thought the article was great...and correct....at the time of the movie....O'Neill was a depressed suicidal madman....and you have to take into account that the o'neill of the series has come to grips with his sons death and is a different person....he is still cranky most of the time.....so I don;t see that big of a difference between the 2...

I think it was the episode called "Secrets". O'Neill and Carter are in D.C. to receive medals for blowing up the two motherships commanded by Apophis and Skaara/Klorel. A reporter who knows way too much about the stargate program approaches O'Neill. Late in the episode, just before the reporter is killed by a speeding black car right in front of O'Neill's eyes, the reporter say's he's going public with the story. O'Neill says something like "That's O'Neill with two L's. There's another Colonel O'Neil and he gets irritated when he's confused with me."
That went whizzing RIGHT over my head when I saw the episode. So was he implying that he's not the same person, despite the pilot episode which makes CLEAR he's the guy who returned from Abydos years earlier? Or was it just a little in-joke for those who caught it?
I think it was an in-joke. He's made references to "two L's" in other episodes, but I don't remember him mentioning the other colonel again.

I think the script writers just made a spelling mistake and added another "L" to the name in the series because it's more often written that way. And then they were trying to wriggle their way out of it by giving some excuse as to why?

Good thread!! It took me a while to realize that Russel and Anderson were playing the same character - remember, I' fairly new to Stargate. That was a nice article indeed, and I do think it was an inside joke in that episode you guys were talking about. Right now, I'm having a brain fart, and can think of no examples, but I have seen a few inside jokes like that on a few shows, including some Star Treks. However, in my mind, Col/General O'Neill will always be Richard Dean Anderson.

Good thread!! It took me a while to realize that Russel and Anderson were playing the same character. Shame on you, Myke !! Are you telling me you never saw the move with Kurt Russell? Because it's like having seen the second and third Aliens film without having watched the first one. The movie is important to the follow-up series, I think, because it shows the reason for the series' existence. Besides which, it's a great movie !! Now get your butt off that chair and rent the DVD...

Nope, I'm saying it has been years since I saw the film, and didn't even know the characters names from the film when I started on the tv series, which wasn't but about 6 months ago or so. I still have a hard time remembering the film, and need to see it again.

LOL But I must say, no matter how many years pass since I saw a movie - if it's one that I am really interested in, that is - I can always remember almost every detail and the dialogue. I am good that way. ;D

Another way I am pretty sure they are the same character is I saw an episode a few days ago that had Skaara in it.....the kid that O'Neil befriended in the movie. They had him as having had been taken over by a symbiote and O'Neil ended up having to kill him but he didn't want to because they had been friends for so long. I find it hard to believe there could be 2 O'Neil's that both befriended Skaara like that.

Yeah...in the pilot there was NO ambiguity that O'Neill had been to Abydos before. Skaara knew him, tried to return the cigarette lighter to him. He knew about Daniel's allergies. Etc. So many tie ins.
Odd that they varied some of the personal details though, like his son's name.

Of course they are the same person - sorry character , they are so real to me. Through the whole series they keep brnging it up. I totally agree with Conquering Wolf.

They also change the design of the hand device. RA's is different to the ones you see in SG-1 and there was only one seat in RA's death gliders but in SG-1 there are 2.
