Do you guys think Carter Burke was acting on company orders to bring back an alien specimen when he tried to sabotage Ripley and Newt, or do you guys think he was acting on his own, possibly trying to profit off of it?

What a question. He was acting on company's orders, of course.
You couldn't trust the company as far as you could spit. Even in the third movie, Bishop - at the end - was still trying to deceive Ripley, telling her he was the real Bishop when, in fact, he was only another android. And he said that he only wanted to help her get rid of the alien, take it out of her and make her better.
And, at any cost, the company was trying to take the impregnated Ripley prisoner, so they could bring her and the alien home. So no, Burke didn't act on his own but on company orders.

I agree, he was the one who placed the 2 facehuggers in the room with Ripley and Newt. But how could he do that? without the facehuggers attacking him, i mean?
(is it ok if i copy some topics to my forum to provoke soem discussion there?)

I think they were kept in large jars anyway, so he must have taken the jars, taken them to the room where Ripley and Newt slept and, leaving the jars standing on the floor, opened the lids and quickly exited.

The reason I asked is because if he was acting on company orders, it seems strange that he and he alone would be sent with the Colonial Marines and company. Is it coincidence that Burke contacted LV-426 to have them investigate the Derelic?
If the company itself was behind this, would it not make sense to alert LT Gorman to their plans so he can instruct the Marines to bring one back a live if possible? Or program Bishop to be like Ash, and ensure their survival?
It just seems to me that Burke was going into business for himself, so to speak.

wolfie and i re-watched aliens a couple days ago (expanded version), and saw colonists in the plant talking about the order coming thru and newt's family going to the derelic, as ordered by the company. the very fact that burke works for the company is what made the colonists not question the order. it was, you might say, 'on company letterhead, so it must be legit,' if that makes any sense. ripley saw through burke's ruse later and figured the same ... that burke looked at the profit potential and sent the order, and no one thought to question it because it was 'an order from the company,' not an individual person, but an entity. loved how he paid for it at the end! the look on his face after the last door opened ... bruhahah

I watched the extended version myself the other day. Never seen Newt's parents before.
And regarding Burke being the only one who was sent, Myke. If you recall, in the first movie, it was only Ash who had been informed by the company to bring back any alien lifeform. And yes, the marines were sent in to rescue the families, if possible, but that doesn't mean that the company (and I think it's not the whole company but only a certain section) doesn't want to get hold of one of those aliens. You find that quite often the same company has different interests it follows, and some of them have kind of secret sub-divisions, the others aren't even aware of.

I think he let the facehuggers run free by pressing controls and the lids on the jars slid open.

I think he was doing it for his own scientific gains.
Also, I've seen an extended version of how he dies, when Riply is searching for Newt at the end, she bumps into Burke, cocooned to a wall, and he says to her "i can feel it inside me Ripley" and she just hands him a grenade... she walks off, then a moment later there's an explosion...

Yeah, she hands him a grenade. You've seen that? I've read about it, and even seen a picture of the scene, but did not know what it was on any extended version.

Oh... I never knew about that. Darn it... last night was the 'longer' version of Aliens on TV. Only watched it for a micro second. Will watch it again all the way when it's on next time.

" While Ripley is making her way to the hive in an effort to save Newt, a hand shoots out and grabs her. She recovers and recognizes the person as Carter Burke. Burke says, "Ripley... help me. I can feel it... inside. Oh, God... it's moving! Oh God." Ripley replies, "Here," and hands him a grenade. Then she moves on after wrapping his fingers around the spoon and pulling the primer. This scene isn't in any released version of the film, but it appears that it was filmed. It's a controversial scene since many people believe a Facehugger would have still been on him due to the time it takes for Embryo implantation." www.planetavp.com/al/Aliens/DeletedScenes/index.htm

Wow... I've got to look for that extended version!
I think that Burke was trying to "expose" Ripley + Newt so that he can gain profit for himself. If he brougt back the alien in newt and Ripley, he could've made a ton if he sold them to some research institute on earth.

Aliens was on TV Saturday night and I watched it, and noticed something. When Burke and Ripley are talking about Burke sending the colonists to the Derelict, Burke keeps telling Ripley that if she is smart, they can come out of this whole thing as winners, meaning they can be rich if they smuggle some aliens back.
If the company had ordered Burke to bring some back, it doesn't seem like he'd be rich, it seems like he's trying to do this on his own, so he can sell the aliens to the weapons division.
