Well, I'll give my take in The Return of The King film. If you haven't seen the film (or read the book) then there will be spoilers obviously.
For me, it was emotional, choatic, moving, angry, suprising, shocking, distressing and thought-provoking; all at the same time. When Peter Jackson says that the emotions felt in this film are far sharper than the other two, he isn't wrong. Although not quite up to the tear-dropping fist-clenching standards of the book, the power of emotion running through the film is definately a strong point. The main things that Peter Jackson bring to the Middle-Earth universe is the sets, characters, locations, weapons and costumes. The Return of The King heightens the standard of all these elements to a new level. The muster of Rohan in Harrowdale is stunning, the seven levels of Minas Tirith breaktaking, and the battle for Pelennor Fields amazing.
Although the scale of the battles (or the number of battles) were smaller than suggested in the book, they were still almost stupid numbers involved. I've never seen so many men and horses used for a battle scene. What I missed most from the battle part of the film were the Southrons and Haradrim in league with Mordor, as well as Imrahil's kinghts of Dol Amroth. I missed seeing siz thousand men outside the Morannon, and I missed seeing Aragorn reach the outside of the Rammas wall with thousands of men under his banner, as well as member of his own kin - the Dúnedain. All we saw was him, Legolas and Gimli plus the army of The Dead sweep over the battlefield, which isn't right at all. Instead we should have seen the battle standard of the ancient kings of Westerness raised for the first time in thousands of years to the disbelief any the foul creatures who simply fall before the new King. The new King of Rohan, Éomer, and Aragorn along with Imrahil should have met in the centre of the battle of the Pelennor, and then the three captains lead to charge to the dismayed orcs and wild men. If the battle was conducted in that way, the conclusion of the battle would have been far more exciting. The charge of the Rohirrim was fantastic, but again, greater numbers could have been used to reflect the strength of Rohan in the books. We should have seen the Mouth of Sauron. We should have. We should have. In the book, the parley between Gandalf and the Mouth of Sauron was the single most decisive passage. In the chapter we see the hope and courage of the men standing infront of the Black Gate fluctuate from no hope to real hope in a matter of seconds as Gandalf and the Mouth of Sauron exchange damaging blows to eachother verbally.
The Scouring of The Shire would have proved to be an anti-climax from a film perspective, so that's not a big miss. Besides, if they had put that chapter in, I would have been very worried that Peter Jackson would have changed it to make Frodo take part in the battle. A very interesting point throughout the books is that Frodo never once kills any enemy at all. He never draws his sword to kill anyone. Obviously, that changed in the film, but having Frodo kill someone would have been an insult to any Tolkien fan, because it's a very big moral point from the books.
EDIT - Please excuse the poor quality of posting here. I haven't read through the post, and I don't think I can be bothered to at the moment.

I can't wait until ROTK EE comes out...if only to see the Houses of Healing scenes they cut out of the original in order to show Arwen cry all the time and Legolad prance around on an oliphaunt.....grrrr!!! quote] Hey hey! Watch what you say about Legolas! He wasn't prancing! I usderstand what you mean about Arwen but you went a step too far with Legolas. It was cool what he did and besides it was only like 30 seconds! What harm did that cause? And people wouldn't know Gimli for saying "That still only counts as one!". What Legolas did was cool!!

Well, I finally saw ROTK a few days ago. It almost took me a year to see it, lol, but better late then never. I must say, I really enjoyed the movie. It was my favorite one of the three, very, very emotional. I enjoyed seeing Sam and Frodo struggle more then ever before, the tension between the two that the ring caused, and the addotional help of Gollum's bad intentions. I also loved seeing thier great journey come to an end, and them getting the much needed rest and happiness they deserve. I liked seeing Pippen and Merrie (sp?) finally get a chance to display thier bravery on a grand scale. I loved seeing the new allienece of men basically go on a suicide mission to Mordor to give Frodo more time to destroy the ring. They had no idea that they would survive. All in all, it was a great movie to me. I realize they left the whole part about the Shire out, and while I would have liked to have seen that, it really dosent bother me that I didn't since I've never read the book, so it was all ok to me.

Well congratulations! It's about time! j/p It really was a great ending to the series.... at least I think it was. With LOTR you either love it or hate it.... I obviously loved it. Now I have to get moving on the books... which I've had for over a year and only read chapter 1 of Fellowship I believe that ROTK really made me fall in love with the "Sam" character even more and despise Gollum! Merry and Pippin were so funny and there was more humor in the extended version of Two Towers, which was really enjoyable! I really suggest to everyone who liked LOTR to see the extended verison of all 3, it's worth it!
