Well, I don't know if I "prefer" anything, but I do love Michael Crichton's novels, which are more like real science fiction. Yunno, like nothing with aliens or anything, but actually dealing with science and scientific matters with fictional characters and scenarios.
Jurassic Park and Timeline are my favorite novels especially by Crichton, but I love all of them (that I have read).
I suppose I am also partial to the Star Wars EU novels, but in my crazy little mind, I don't really consider those true sci-fi.
I consider sci-fi to be those dealing with science and related areas.
Star Wars, Star Trek and the like I consider more to be like space epics and space operas.
So that's me.

What kind of Sci-Fi are those?
Just future adventures? Or with aliens?

They all have something to do with alien species or space travel.

There is a great deal of problems with science fiction - it is hard to tell the difference between a horror movie from a science fiction one. Aliens have become increasingly evil and dangerous. Some want to conquer Earth [Why do they always want to conquer Earth?] or destroy humanity like the Terminators, Aliens, Species,Predators. Body Snatchers have become the new demons. The simpler age was Star Trek {TOS} was fun travelling across the universe and not come across such creatures. That was real science fiction. Because it was fictionalised Science. Travelling in space and meeting beings from other worlds in their space ships. Or going to different planets and coming across new civilisations. I love space travel science fiction minus the horror factor.
