But even as an adult, I can see aspects to the first films that the new ones do not possess. Who knows, maybe it is that special feeling. Don't get me wrong, I love the new films, I love the fact that the first film was more or less a political movie showing us the dying days of the Old Rebublic and the beginning if the empire, but still, something seems to be missing.

I have a theory. The element that is missing, in my opinion .. is X-Wings! Nah, I was joking but it has an ounce of truth. We remember the original Star Wars trilogy for being possibly the greatest sci-fi story ever told. Being brilliant (and more importantly, successfull) the ideas that Star Wars brought into the world of sci-fi have been used and re-used, rebuilt and streamlined. There is only so far you can go with creativity and originality - you can't invent the wheel more than once, so to speak. The original trilogy blew us all away; the new films were never going to have the same effect because as I said, the original trilogy gave us everything that we wanted and more in the Star Wars universe. What I'm trying to say is, you can't have two groundbreaking episodes of history from the same universe. Ok, bear with me ... what I mean is everything that was good about the newer films we already saw in the originals - and in many cases we saw better back in those days. When we first saw those three classic films we were blown away because we had never seen anything like it before. Wow! An evil black mask .. thing. That's really good! Robots! OMG what are those white troop people things?! They look really evil. Anyway, what we see is simply replacements for the original character, vehicles, locations etc. They have tried to go back to the old trilogy as much as possible with primitive Star Destroyers, Tusken Raiders etc etc. However, we aren't going to see TIE-fighters and X-Wing fighting above Naboo. It isn't going to happen. You aren't going to have the Empire bludgening thier way through planet systems on the trial of the herioc Rebel Alliance. There will be no walking carpet or "peice of junk". Instead they've tried to go for the next best thing (because the original trilogy is so good it doesn't need improving - we just wanted more of the same) - which is a childish Gungan, a double-lightsabre weilding freak, a mysterious conspirator (Darth Sidious), clone troopers, an old venerable Jedi and his rash apprentice (in both EP I and II), R4, Jedi Starfighters, Jango Fett, Obi-Wan severing someone's arm in a Coruscant nightclub (rather than a Tatooine bar) .. you get the point. Basically, what we wanted is exactly the same as what we already had, but more. More of the same. It's impossible to do that when you are going into a different period of history. In that way, the recent films are only really there to set us up for the classic trilogy, because the sort of feeling that we got when we first watched those three films won't be repeated again. Not unless you start afresh with something completely different. The recent films are not completely different, and you can't start again (you already have much of the plot laid down by the original trilogy), so you can only do the best with what you have. I think they George has succeeded admirably on that level because he gave us the background to the real films. I knew that when EP I was announced, we weren't going to experience the same as what we did experience all those years ago. However .. in Episide III, that could all change because now Lucas has free reigns to do what he wants because he is at a period of history where he can blend the stories of both sets of films together, which includes everything that we loved about the original trilogy. We may yet see TIE-fighters and storm troopers .. and of course, the legend that is Darth Vader.

I agree with Ash, damn good points!! And I to share the Star Wars experience with my kid, but being that she is a 6 year old girl, she will never enjoy them as much as I did at her age, simply for the fact she is a female, but sitll yet, she enjoys them!

?? I myself was about 6 or 7 when first seeing the trilogy on television. I happen to be female IRL and back then, I recall enjoying every movie just as much as any boy my age or anything male.....to the present day I enjoy each one the same as I did then. I saw ROTJ in-theater in 1983 (circumstance had it that that was the only one I could see on a huge screen), and as a 6 and 7 year old, as a female, I remember being absolutely just as swept away by the splendor of it all as the average boy my age, or even the average teenage boy. >>...she will never enjoy them as much as I did at her age, simply for the fact she is a female, but sitll yet, she enjoys them!<< ... contrariwise, doesn't Star Wars, by nature, make it a point to cater with complete, total fervor to both male and female crowds? It did with Queen Amidala in Episode 1 and her fighting spirit near the end. Mon Mothma (ROTJ) was one of the founders of the Rebel Alliance, and she happens to be female also. A female pilot witnessed Anakin blowing up the inside of a space station in Episode 1... We can tell quite clearly neither Sith nor Stormtrooper nor Snowtrooper nor Dark of Dark Side trifles with Princess Leia.... The Ewoks, in a way, also catered to girls very subtly, in a soft, subliminal manner, catering to their feminine side. They are, after all, resemblant to teddy bears, apart from the fact that not even the dark side could grab hold of them. Leia's warm, friendly interaction with them can also prove, as can all these other examples, that boys, teen boys, men, girls, teen girls and women are equally blown away by George Lucas' impeccable, unmistakable genius.

Have to agree there. I was seven when I first watched A New Hope and I like Star Wars more than any of my male friends and probably most of the boys in my year at school! I also like it more than my own brother, who is three years younger than me. As for this poll, I don't think I'll vote until Episode III is out. I like all the films, although I think Phantom Menace isn't as good as the others. As for favourite trilogy, though, that award probably goes to the OT for now.

I really think the quality of Revenge of the Sith will make or break the new trilogy in alot of peoples eyes.
I for one, have high expectations for Episode III. I think it is going to be alot like Episode V, The Empire Stikes Back, really, REALLY dark and evil, but that's my kind of movie. ;D

Yes, I'm hoping it'll be dark like ESB too.

Too bad you couldn;t add a little humor as well....like when Anakin falls in the lava and is pulled out or whatever he is saying..."Ouch, fuck , shit that hurts" or whe the emperor looks at his burned deformed body he pulls a line from Predator and says" Damn Anakin, you're one ugly mother fucker"

ESB is my personal fave( as of yet, wel still need to wait until ROTS)
Amoung the other things I like about ESB(which there are many,) my personal highlight of that movie is Luke getting completely owned by Vader in that deul in the underside of cloud city.
But I have high hopes for ROTS, I think theres a good chance of seeing Vader completely owning a few other Jedi.

I Think Revenge of the Sith is going to be the Empire Strikes Back of the new SW Trilogy.
