I'm kinda in the middle. I want to believe, and I am influenced to do so, but I have a few big doubts that no-one could clear...

I am a Taoist. I believe the universe itself is god, and our conscioussness's are just parts of a larger mind, a universal consciousness. There are levels of consciousness and reality as we know it is only an illusion. Once we become one with nature, and realize the balance of it we are enlightened.

Explanation why please... unless you don't want to ;D I don't think there are any Gods. I simply believe what my 5 senses let me believe: If I can touch it, smell it, see it, hear it, or taste it, I believe it. I can't see, hear, taste, smell or see God. And please, ffs, DON'T tell me "we see God when some guy welcomes the poor man into his house" or "we see God when students say no to drugs and yes to study" or some other crap like it. It drives me insane! I see God when he killed thousands of people on Boxing Day last year. I see God when volcanos erupt, earthquakes rip the earth in half, tornados blast whole cities to hell. Do you believe in electricity? Do you believe in love? Can you taste, hear, smell, or see them? I'm not trying to be sarcastic but if you have anyone in your life who you care about (like your friend for instance) surely that care or love isn't simply based on what that person can do for you. And if we establish that fact then where does that unselfish characteristic come from? God is perfect. God is love. The state that the world is in is a result of evil. Evil will end in the future. When the bible talks about "fearing God" it means an extreme reverence. Read Isaiah 53. You know, it can now be proven scientifically through carbon dateing that this book was written thousands of years ago and a long time before Jesus was born and yet it is obviously refering to the events of the life of Jesus. That alone is worth investigation. You might want to take a look at the book "The Case for Christ" by Lee Strobel. He was a lot like you and set out to dis-prove the bible but in his discoveries became a believer. I say why not read it and at least make an informed decision instead of just saying He must prove Himself to you.

Here's a question I like asking. Do you believe in God? My first thought was: What is a thread about believing in God doing in the 'Astronomer's Sector'. And for those who want to find out about the universe and how it all started, I suggest reading Bill Bryson's book: A Short History of Nearly Everything. It's an eye-opener, and entertaining to read.

Shush val, i posted it, so it makes perfect sense :] Over the time I've been gone, I've come to rediscover God, I do believe in him, but now I simply believe, I'm not after any of that worship stuff, etc. I believe I've reached an accord with God, I'll believe, as long as I don't have to pray, worship, do all that stuff. But he never has to help me, besides, I'd never ask for his help anyway. So I do believe in god, i just don't believe in the ethical side of him.

I believe in God, but like many people have likely said, not the Christian God. I don't really have a name for my beliefs... I sort of believe that God keeps a balance in all things. Like, balances good and evil, order and chaos, and even high and low pressure, and all sorts of things. I guess that's how I would justify "God" punishing people all the time, and it could also explain Job and other stories in the bible. I'm not sure how praying would fit in... maybe God would balance happiness and sadness, and having your prayers fulfilled would make one happy? I don't know about an afterlife... it might make sense if God were to balance life and death... our reality is objective mostly, so perhaps the afterlife would be subjective? Perhaps who you are in the afterlife depends on how people remember you... that could explain why Egyptian Pharaohs, etc., wanted to be remembered as gods.
I'm still working out what I believe in fact.

The problem with your "thousands of years ago" arguement is this: the people who invented the New Testiment had DEFINATELY read the old testiment. They could easily have revised it to follow what happened in the old testimate. Anyway, I just can't trust the contents of a book to prove anything. I'm not saying you can't believe it, but I just have a problem with forcing beliefs on people.

Isn't that cool? My religion is somewhat similar to Daoism. I never knew it.
I'ma going to go research more about it. Thanks Transdimensional.

Well, in terms of religion for me, my beliefs are always changing. However, I never seemto rest on the poular beliefs that form the names of 'Christianity, Judaism, Islam' etc. I may sometimes take ideas from Christianity's side, but that's only because I was taught about it in school so I know more about it. But mainly, I have my own thoughts and beliefs - which are more open to change and I believe that people should have the right to make their own rules in a belief. Not to have their belief categorised under one name. "Right, your a Christian then". I don't like that

No, I don't believe in God. The term "God" is just a name for a compressed deity. Those religions that came before christianity and all the other now active religions believed in a large number of Gods, each with a different task. Who are we to say that Zeus, Apollo, Isis, Hades, and the other Gods aren't real? They did come before "God"... Are you sure they're not still here?

For me it's like a yes and no...first off...if I confuse you then forget what I'm saying/said, because I am no good at explaining things...
I do believe in God...but then there are other times when I ask "Is there really a God?" and just stuff that no one can answer...so there are times when it seems like there is no God and for me my family on both sides are really riligest...like on my mom's side...almost everyone has a name that is religest...like there is Rebekah (my mom),John (I have an uncle and dad named John), David (cousin), James (cousin), Rachel (aunt), Elizabeth (aunt), Faith (cousin), Hope (cousin), Joy (me)...there is more to my family...but my family is huge...so yeah...for me it is "yes" but sometimes I wonder if anyone can really prove it...
